This song was written by Lutheran Minister Martin Rinkart after his city became a refuge during the Thirty Year War. The crowding of the walled city of Eilenburg contributed to a devastating plague which took the lives of thousands of people. Martin Rinkart conducted an average of 50 funerals weekly. He wrote these beautiful words during a time of 4000 funerals including that of his wife.
