Beloved community,

Many of us are feeling the weight of the world right now.

We see legislation harming transgender people.
We see war devastating families and communities.
We see immigrant neighbors living with fear and uncertainty.
And so many other places where dignity and safety are under threat.

In moments like this, our faith does not call us to look away from grief. It calls us to hold one another close and remember who we are.

People grounded in love.
People committed to justice.
People still building beloved community — even now.

Today, March 3, is the Feast Day of John and Charles Wesley.

A charge to keep I have,
a God to glorify,
a never-dying soul to save,
and fit it for the sky.

To serve the present age,
my calling to fulfill;
O may it all my powers engage
to do my Master's will!

~ Charles Wesley (UMH 413)

“It may be needful to specify whom I mean by this ambiguous term; since it would be lost labour to speak to Methodists, so called, without first describing those to whom I speak. By Methodists I mean, a people who profess to pursue (in whatsoever measure they have attained) holiness of heart and life, inward and outward conformity in all things to the revealed will of God; who place religion in an uniform resemblance of the great object of it; in a steady imitation of Him they worship, in all his imitable perfections; more particularly, in justice, mercy, and truth, or universal love filling the heart, and governing the life.”

~ John Wesley, (Advice to the People Called Methodists, 1745)

We know that our hearts are heavy as we witness the mounting loss of life from the ongoing military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel, and from retaliatory strikes by Iran. We’ve updated our Glossary of Terms.

Language evolves. So does the church.

This refreshed resource keeps the heart of our original glossary while expanding it to reflect the conversations we’re having in 2026 — in congregations, classrooms, and communities.

We’ve added terms that:

• Celebrate identity and belonging — like Pride, Chosen Family, Affirmation, and Beloved Community
• Offer thoughtful language for identity and community
• Clarify language around harm, privilege, and systemic injustice

This glossary can support:

• Small groups seeking deeper understanding
• Ministry leaders guiding thoughtful conversations
• Church councils shaping inclusive policies
• Youth ministries caring for students with clarity and confidence

Language isn’t about perfection. It’s about posture.
