Sermon Notes 053126 AM
For the Love of Christ!
2 Corinthians 5:14-21
Theme:
Love of Christ and Love for Christ

Introduction: (Gal 2:20)
§§ - As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are to be driven, compelled, by the love of Christ to have a love for Christ and our service and walk for Him.

For the love of Christ:

I. His Love Mortifies – “if one died for all, then were all dead” (2 Cor 5:14-15)
§§ - The love of Christ compelled Him to be our substitute on the cross and die for our sin to satisfy our debt to God – That believers may die to sin (1 Jn 2:2)

II. His Love Reorganizes – “henceforth know we him no more” (2 Cor 5:16)
§§ - The love of Christ reorganizes our thinking to the true Christ.

III. His Love Regenerates – “he is a new creature” (2 Cor 5:17; Titus 3:5)
§§ - The love of Christ = a level of excellence in Christ through the Holy Spirit

IV. His Love Reconciles – “to seek & to save” (2 Cor 5:18-19)
§§ - The love of Christ changed the believer from being an enemy of God to being savable = all things are of God (Ro 5:10)

V. His Love Exalts – “Now then we are ambassadors” (2 Cor 5:20)
§§ - The love of Christ exalts (elevates) the believer as a representative for Jesus Christ to a new level of excellence - to plead for others to be reconciled with God.

VI. His Love Cleanses – “we might be made the righteousness of God” (2 Cor 5:21)
§§ - The love of Christ cleanses the unrepentant sinner from sins of scarlet to wearing robes of white. (Isa 1:18; Rev 3:5; 7:9-14; 19:4)
- The regenerated sinner is to echo the love of Christ!

CONCLUSION:
1. Christ’s love is independent of time and space – as we have never seen Christ
2. Christ’s love is available to all – as it is individualized for each person
3. Christ’s love is solvent to melt people’s hearts – as He bore their sin
4. Christ’s love is power – upon which our love for Him is charged.

“For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners,
so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.”
(Romans 5:19)

“Life is never better than when the power of Christ’s echoed love
rules our heart and lives.”
– Alexander Maclaren

Sermon Notes 052426 AM
Looking Unto Jesus
Hebrews 12:1-3
Theme:
A life focused on Jesus Christ

Introduction:
§§- We must not look at the length of the course, nor to the condition of the track, nor to our strength; nor to applauding friends; nor to the condemning foes; but wholly and solely to the incarnate Son of God who draws us onward to Him by His invincible grace. (Jn 12:32)

Let us see how Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith:

I. Jesus As Author of our Salvation – “Looking unto Jesus the author …” (Heb 12:2)
A. Jesus is our Commander – He establishes the vector for His disciples (Jn 13:34-35)
B. Jesus is our Champion – He establishes the victories (Jn 10:28-29; Ro 8:37-39)
C. Jesus is our Creator – He establishes all things (Col 1:16)
§§ - To better understand Salvation, is to better understand the author of our Salvation.

II. Jesus As Finisher of our Faith – “Looking unto Jesus the finisher…” (Heb 12:2)
A. Jesus Perfected His pain and suffering – brought healing (Lk 12:50; Isa 53:5)
B. Jesus Provided power over Sin – brought redemption (Ro 6:14; Heb 2:14; 1 Jn 3:8)
C. Jesus Proved His love toward us – brought grace (Ro 5:8; Jn 10:11; 15:13)
§§ - To better understand our salvation is to better understand the completer of our salvation.

CONCLUSION:
1- The believer is to be confident in their salvation because of the author and finisher – Salvation is by the Grace of God; not of man (Eph 2:8-9)

2- The believer is to be focusing on Jesus Christ who waits at the finish line of our race.

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended:
but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind,
and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
(Philippians 3:13-14)

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, not just as the starting point of our journey,
but as the finisher who brings our faith to full maturity."
- A.W. Tozer

Sermon Notes 051726 AM
Harps Upon the Willows
Psalm 137:1-4
Theme:
When God’s people lose their joy in their walk with Jesus

Introduction: (Psalm 100:1-2)
§§- Where are your harps (joy, worship) today? Is there a song in your heart for the Lord? Where are the victories and the service you once knew?

When harps go silent:

I. The Reason for Silent Harps – “the captors required of us a song” (Psa 137:3)
A. God’s people were out of partnership – “by the rivers of Babylon”
B. God’s people were out of practice (Psa 137:4)
C. God’s people were out of plans
§§ - God’s people should weep when they get out of fellowship with God!
- God’s people should guard against losing the joy songs in their hearts!

II. The Result of Silent Harps – “we sat down…by the rivers of Babylon” (Psa 137:1)
A. We sat – their grief, dejected, despair and desperation (1 Kgs 19:4-5,9-11)
B. We wept – their captivity by the enemy for forced labor (Dan 1:4)
C. We remembered – their love of Zion taken for granted (Lk 15:13-18)
D. We hung our harps – their captors sarcastically asked “sing us songs of Zion” (v.3)
§§ - The Harps went silent because Israel had sinned! (Lam 1:8)

III. The Remedy for Silent Harps – “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?” (Psa 137:4)
A. Remember the joy of the Lord – God’s mercy & fellowship w/ Jesus (Psa 51:1)
B. Repent prepares for the joy of the Lord – God’s purging from apathy (Psa 51:7-11)
C. Restore your life to receive the joy of the Lord – God’s deliverance from self (Psa 51:12-14)
§§ - Only the deliverance by Jesus Christ can restore the erring believer to joy and song!

CONCLUSION:
- Captivation of God’s people by sin puts them beyond being helpful to others!
- Captivation of God’s people by sin silences their joyful worship of the Savior!
- The harps of the Israelites went silent because God’s blessings had run dry!

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit:
a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”
(Psalm 51:17)

“Your heart’s desire, even if you haven’t realized it,
is to live every moment in the wonder of worship.”
– David Jeremiah
