Another year of learning is in the books! It was a fitting ending to our Sunday school year as our primary students celebrated Jewish American Heritage Month held each May. It is a time to uplift and enjoy Jewish culture. They made posters promoting the month, ate a variety of Jewish foods, listened to songs sung by and/or written by Jewish musicians and artists, and read the proclamation issued by President Obama during his term proclaiming the month as JAHM.
Before you know it, we'll be back in session in September! Enjoy your summer.

Today we participated in Good Deeds Day. This annual event was started in 2007 by an Israeli businesswoman and philanthropist, Shari Arison. The idea was to promote doing good, thinking good, and speaking good in our own communities. It went international in 2011 and now has people from 110 countries participating. Our Sunday school students made our own contributions by decorating four dozen cookies for first responders; creating 35 snack packs for families served by Ronald McDonald House at Lutheran General Hospital; making cards for a local senior living facility; making 39 cat toys for the Anti-Cruelty Society; and collecting diapers and baby wipes for a local baby pantry. It's always important to remember that Sunday school is about the other six days of the week!

Mah nishtanah halailah hazeh? Why was this night different from all other nights? Because I had the privilege of attend the Passover Seder celebration at the Governor's Mansion hosted by Governor JB Pritzker and First Lady MK Pritzker last evening. I was honored to be included. Wishing everyone a Chag Pesach Sameach, a very happy Passover!

It was such a sweet morning as we celebrated Passover with our annual chocolate seder. This year was even sweeter as we were joined by Rabbi Adam Chalom and the students of Kol Hadash. What's a chocolate seder you may ask? A seder where everything is chocolate of course! Four cups of chocolate milk, green M&M's as the karpas, dipping a strawberry in chocolate syrup and a pretzel stick in chocolate hummus, chocolate-covered matzah, a Hillel sandwich with a Hershey kiss and marshmallow, and charoset made from chocolate Cheerios, raisins and mini-chocolate chips. Fun, delicious and wonderful way to retell the Passover story.

Happy International Women's Day! And enjoy the rest of Jewish Women's History month. We certainly did with a portrayal of Ruth Bader Ginsburg that kept our students enthralled and then asking such thoughtful questions. Thank you . After that, our students created their own portraits of Jewish women they wanted to celebrate.

Purim! It has been Purim all day long as we celebrated with our Sunday school students this morning, and with adults this afternoon. Our students made gluten-free hamantashen and created little mishaloach manot baskets filled with candy. For the groggers, we used boxes of pasta that make noise when shaken, and which will be donated to the local food pantry tomorrow. Finally we used chalk to write Haman's name on the bottom of our shoes to stamp out his name and all evil.
But the day didn't stop there! This afternoon we gathered at a member's home to make hamantashen, tell a few jokes, and to enjoy wine and cheese together.

Our upper primary students are studying life cycle this semester. There are so many ways to approach it, including how Jewish life cycle has been depicted in art (especially by Chagall and Oppenheim). The students were able to create their own paintings and/or sculptures on the topic. Take a look at this paining on canvas!! Hands on learning is always so much fun!

We celebrated Tu B'shevat which begins tonight with our annual Tu B'shevat seder. Our students first made bird feeds. Trying to be good stewards of the earth, we used compostable plates and all the nutshells, banana peels, clementine peels etc will be composted; all the cardboard packaging will be recycled. Leftover fruit, and packages of figs and dates were taken to the community fridge in Evanston where the people served were very appreciative. Chag sameach to everyone!!

There's nothing more heartening and the perfect antidote to the horrors the world is experiencing than to see children doing a mitzvah or good deed for people they will never know. As part of the Nourish Our Neighborhoods program of JUF, our primary students packaged almost three dozen food kits with the foodstuffs generously donated by our community. We can all learn from their example!

An incredible Chanukah celebration this morning. Decorating gluten free Chanukah cookies, making LEGO dreidels, eating latkes, playing Chanukah bingo and singing Chanukah songs. A wonderful and festive time together! Let us all bring light into the world this week and long after the last candle is extinguished.
