Beloveds, Unitarian Universalism is a tradition that brings the best of human care and goodness into the world. As we enter into another congregational year, with a world full of heartbreak and struggle, I remain grateful to be living into our shared values together with you. This year, my hope for us is that we continue to embrace a deep commitment to build for the future and for generations to come.

Here at the UUA, we rely on our relationships with you, and on your continued support, to elevate congregational life and advance our UU values in the world. Engaging with our programs is an important way to support our relational commitments with one another and there are some really wonderful, fresh offerings coming out this fall.

On behalf of our entire Unitarian Universalist Association, I bring you love and blessings as we move into this new congregational year. May we experience the sense of connection and care that comes with being part of a larger community, even as you each carry out your own essential and lifesaving ministries in your own communities.

Despite being widely discredited by major medical organizations due to evidence that it is ineffective and increases risk of su***de, the US Supreme Court recently ruled in a Colorado case to support the repugnant practice of conversion therapy.

As I shared with Religion News Service in response to the ruling, ‘conversion therapy’ is not only medically spurious, its history is inseparable from a kind of religious malpractice that tells LGBTQI+ people that something about them is inherently depraved and in need of fixing. Unitarian Universalism unequivocally declares that all people are born beloved and whole as a matter of our religious faith and values, and the beautiful diversity of sexualities and gender identities that we contain are sacred gifts to be honored, affirmed, and protected.

As a tradition with a decades-long history of fighting for full rights, inclusion, and affirmation of LGBTQI+ people within our faith and in the larger world, UUs reject any practice that suggests gender or sexuality are defects to be corrected, rather than the profound expressions of divine love and blessing that they are. The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) will continue our work protecting the rights of LGBTQI+ people in the United States.
