This Labor Day, we give thanks for the work of hands, hearts, and minds that strengthens our community.

We give thanks for those whose labor often goes unnoticed—for caregivers and teachers, first responders and service workers, nonprofit staff and volunteers, construction workers and office workers, and everyone who shows up each day to make a difference.

In that spirit, Zion and all of our ministries are closed today. Happy Labor Day!

Welcome to Worship at Zion!

Today, we reflected on Jesus’ words in Matthew 18, including the familiar promise: “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”

It’s easy to think of this passage as being primarily about church discipline. But Jesus is really talking about what it means to live together as a community—especially when things aren’t easy. We worship together, serve together, celebrate together, work through challenges together, and sometimes even disagree together.

As Zion prepares to enter a new chapter and a new season of ministry, we may not know exactly what the road ahead will look like. But we know we don’t walk it alone.

Part of last week’s closing of the sale of the school property included a payoff of our mortgage. For the first time in 20+ years, Zion is debt free!

During worship this morning, our young adult group symbolically burned the mortgage, showing that the future of the church will not be burdened with the debts of the past.

For all that has been, for all that is, and for all that will be — thanks be to God!

Welcome to Worship at Zion!

What kind of Jesus do we want?

In today’s gospel lesson, we reflected on Peter’s attempt to steer Jesus away from the cross—and the temptation we all face to remake Jesus into the Savior we want: one who makes life easier, solves our problems, and asks little of us.

But Jesus says, “Follow me.”

Follow me toward the stranger.
Follow me toward the hurting.
Follow me toward the neighbor.
Follow me all the way to the cross.

Because the way of Jesus is the way of genuine love: welcoming, serving, forgiving, sharing, and overcoming evil with good.

In Sunday's sermon, I preached on the appointed Gospel text from Matthew 16:13-20. In this passage, Peter makes a bold confession: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus responds, “On this rock (confession) I will build my church.”

The Greek word for church actually means an assembly—a gathering of people, not a building. What makes us the church isn't our building, our programs, or our history. Our unity is in Christ. As we reflect on our campus and our future, this is important to remember. Throughout our 68 years, we have built and changed buildings to serve the ministry God was doing among us. The buildings have mattered, but they have never been the foundation. Jesus is.

As we enter the season of "God's Work, Our Hands," we are reminded that the confession of faith is only the beginning. Christ gathers us, and then sends us into the world to serve, welcome, forgive, feed, and love our neighbors.

Zion Lutheran Church, Evergreen Academy of Zion, and Nina's Place are not going anywhere. We may not know exactly what Zion or these ministries will look like in the years ahead. But we know our foundation, we know who is building the church, and we can be excited about what God has in store.

Welcome to Worship at Zion!

In today's gospel reading, Jesus says, “On this rock I will build my church.” The church isn't ultimately a building, a program, or an institution. We are the ἐκκλησία—the people gathered around one confession: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

As we enter the season of "God’s Work, Our Hands," we’ll be exploring what that confession looks like when we live it out together—in service, welcome, forgiveness, generosity, and love of our neighbors.

And as Zion continues to discern what God has in store for this campus and our future, we can do so with hope. Buildings change. Ministries change. Communities change. But Christ remains our foundation—and Christ is still building his church.

What an exciting thing to be part of. ❤️
