Part 2 — From the Staff to the Ark: God Dwelling Among His People
“Lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea.” ~ Exodus 14:16
“When the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord of all the earth passes before you into the Jordan…” ~ Joshua 3:11
At the Red Sea, Moses lifted his staff, and God parted the waters.
At the Jordan, priests carrying the Ark stepped into the flood, and the waters parted again.
The difference was not only in who acted, but in how God revealed Himself.
At the Red Sea, His power flowed through a chosen leader’s obedience.
At the Jordan, His presence moved among a consecrated people.
The staff in Moses’ hand represented authority, God’s delegated power to lead, protect, and deliver.
But the Ark represented abiding presence, the glory of God dwelling among His people.
This was a sacred shift from a man standing before the people to God walking among them.
In the wilderness, the Ark had always gone before them, a visible reminder of covenant and mercy. Now, at the Jordan, it would enter the waters with them, showing that the crossing into promise was no longer by command from afar, but by the nearness of God Himself.
The Ark carried within it:
• The Tablets of the Law — His Word and covenant.
• The Golden Pot of Manna — His daily provision.
• Aaron’s Rod that Budded — His authority confirmed by resurrection life.
Together, they pointed to the coming reality of Christ — the Word made flesh, the Bread of Life, the Risen High Priest.
When the priests stepped into the water, they carried the testimony of who God is: truth, sustenance, and life.
This time, the miracle happened not when they lifted something, but when they carried Someone.
Reflection
The Church today stands in this same calling. We are not spectators waiting for God to act through others, but vessels called to carry His presence into a world flooded with uncertainty.
When we step forward in obedience bearing Christ within us, the same power that stilled the Jordan still works through humble faith and consecrated hearts.
“For we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” 2 Corinthians 4:7
🙏 Prayer
Lord, thank You for the honor of carrying Your presence.
Teach us to walk as priests before You, humble, consecrated, and aware that You dwell within us.
Let Your Word guide us, Your Spirit sustain us, and Your resurrection life flow through us,
that wherever we step, Your presence would make a way.
Amen.
