How long do we ride the fence? Welcome to The Word with Pastor David. In Joshua 24:14-15 the aging leader challenges the people:



“ “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness…if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.””



Notice that Joshua mentions the gods of the peoples that surround Israel that were defeated by the Lord’s mighty hand. He is illustrating the weakness of those religions, and the power of the One who gave them the Promised Land.



The point being made is to pick a side. The Lord has lost patience with a people that rides the fence. They worship the Lord and they worship the gods of their surrounding culture. He calls them to make a choice.



And for us, we are called to get off the fence as well. We need to fully devote to the Lord, and not dabble in the idols of our surrounding culture. True blessing and help come from the Lord. So, choose faithfulness. Pick a side.

What can help us when we are facing new challenges? Welcome to The Word with Pastor David. The Israelites were facing new challenges near the end of Joshua’s life, and in Joshua 24:13 he reminds them of the invasion of the land:



“So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.

Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness.”



God reminds the Israelites that they have been given many blessings that they did not earn. And we can be helped to remember the same when facing our challenges. We are not on our own in these challenges. It does not all rest on our abilities. The Lord who has given unearned blessing in the past can give to us again.



When we remember how God has blessed it knocks down both pride and cowardice. Remembering God’s past blessing promotes both humility and confidence in the Lord. We can serve the Lord who has blessed. We can trust he will help us with any challenge before us.
