Decorah UU

Decorah UU Decorah UU is a welcoming, lay-led spiritual community moving together in time in an open search for truth and meaning.

NEIUUF is a young UU Fellowship, formed officially in December of 2004 and welcomed into affiliation with the national Unitarian Universalist Association in January of 2005. Our members come from communities in southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa, congregating in Decorah, Iowa, located in the state’s scenic bluff country on the Upper Iowa River. We are a small lay-led liberal community with dif

fering beliefs, but our shared principles bring us together as we affirm the worth and dignity of all persons, the need for justice and compassion, a free and responsible search for truth and meaning, and a respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. Our Fellowship meets every Sunday (every other Sunday in the summer) at Bethania Church on the grounds of Vesterheim Museum, in Decorah (unless otherwise noted). We begin our service or program at 10:00 a.m. At 11:00 we have social time with snacks and beverages. Please see our website for more information. Notice about posting to the NEIUUF page:

Margaret Titus Olmstead. Have you ever heard of this woman? Probably not. She was the first woman to lead a congregation in Decorah-in the first years of the 20th century. She was pastor of Unity Church, the current Elks building. She was an ordained Universalist minister who served the congregation of Unitarians, Universalists and more. She was a member of a group called the Iowa Sisterhood, women who began and served new congregations in the western frontier of the late 1800's - 1930.

Traveling with the Living and the Dead: A Pilgrimage for the 21st Century with Gereon Kopf
At The Lingonberry

In the US, pilgrimages are often regarded as an antiquated form of spirituality. Luther College professor of religion Gereon Kopf will share his reflections, in which he will combine his own experience with Catholic as well as Buddhist pilgrimages and the need to walk with people across multiple divisions, imagined and real, in order to enable holistic spirituality and facilitate global peace.

When one strand of the web is broken, the entire web is prone to collapse. When we in UU spaces speak of our 7th principle, belief in the interdependent web of all existence, we are not merely speaking in metaphors. Our existences are intricately woven with all life. When violence, oppression, and marginalization occur elsewhere in the world we are consciously and unconsciously bound to it, and vice versa. A service by Cameron Young of MidAmerica Region, read by Decorah UU members.
