Oakhurst Baptist Church

Oakhurst Baptist Church Oakhurst Baptist Church is located in the Oakhurst Community in Decatur, GA. All are welcome as we come together to be the church of God in Christ.

We are a Baptist congregation with a rich and unique evolution, from large and quintessential SBC model to radical example of engaged Christian discipleship. Through the crucible of racial integration in the 1960s, the church learned that we could take a stand for integrity and not only survive, but eventually—through much toil and transformation—even thrive. Largely because of the leadership of a

relative outsider (a Canadian) as pastor and a small band of powerful, faithful people who were converted around the issue, the church was able to transcend its cultural captivity. A large percentage of the church membership left, and those remaining found a new identity in writing a covenant. All this helped create an environment in which church members would continue to examine cultural issues in light of a more radical vision of the gospel, as well as the principles of the Radical Reformation which historic Baptists had helped to start centuries ago. At each crossroads issue—including women’s rights, homelessness, gay and le***an rights, peace and justice, disability rights and others—the church wrestled and reaffirmed this particular commitment to authentic Christian living. There exists now a firmly rooted culture of expectation that we will model among Baptists and other Christians a radical form of integrity to our own tradition coupled with openness and relevance to a multi-cultural, inter-faith world. This Sunday we will be celebrating creation. Please bring something you love (or something that represents something you love) from the natural world to share about during the service. It could be a rock, a leaf from your favorite tree, or a sea shell from your favorite beach. If it's a beloved animal, you can bring a picture. Get creative and we'll celebrate creation together!

A prayer for America by Ashley Robinson, one of our pastors.

God, your glory is alive all around us—I see your glory in every glimmer of hope that’s left in the eyes of immigrant parents who want a place to put down roots. Your glory sparkles in the lives of every q***r beloved—every ounce of their laughter, their tears, and their unapologetic joy shines with your presence. I see your glory in this land--this land that does not belong to us. Your glory echoes in the tress that still sing the songs of the Muscogee (Creek) people. Your glory ripples through the rivers, swollen with the sweat and the tears of the enslaved, as a torrent that begs us to keep moving, keep flowing toward justice. Your glory dances right over borders that don’t exist in your eternal atlas.

If this breath of eternity teaches us anything, may it be that America is a moment—a blink in the eyes of forever. May we remember that we have the power to make this moment a dream or a nightmare for your beloved who move through this place. May we remember that your glory existed before the very world existed, so that we’re not fooled into thinking that America is the final expression of your kingdom.

Empower us as believers to move through this moment with humility, making room for the beautiful tapestry of humanity at your welcome table.

God, bless America. Bless America with a moral revival so that our wealth would stop funding wars and instead fund compassion. God bless America with empathy. God, bless us, Americans, with the courage to make your justice, your joy, and your love come alive in this land.

Amen.
