What Can We Do for the Departed?

Our sorrow for loved ones who have fallen asleep would be endless and inconsolable if the Lord had not granted us eternal life. Our life would be meaningless if it ended with death.
What, then, would be the benefit of a virtuous life and good deeds?

In that case, those who say, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die,” would be right. But man was created for immortality, and through His Resurrection Christ opened the gates of the Kingdom of Heaven—eternal blessedness for those who believed in Him and lived righteously.

If someone wishes to show love for the departed and truly help them, this can best be done by praying for them—especially by submitting their names to be commemorated at the Divine Liturgy, when particles are taken out for the living and the departed and then placed into the Blood of the Lord with the words: “Wash away, O Lord, with Thy holy Blood, the sins of Thy servants here commemorated, through the prayers of Thy saints.”

Nothing greater or better can we do for those who have departed than to pray for them, commemorating them at the Divine Liturgy. This is always necessary for them, but especially during the first forty days, when the soul of the departed journeys toward its eternal dwelling places.

At that time, the body feels nothing: it does not see the loved ones gathered around, it does not breathe the fragrance of the flowers, it does not hear the funeral speeches. But the soul senses the prayers offered for it, and it is grateful to those who pray, and is spiritually close to them.

O relatives and friends of the departed! Do for them what is within your power and what they need most.
That path awaits you as well, and know that when that time comes, all of us will desire someone to remember us in prayer. Therefore, let us also be merciful toward the departed.
