On this day in 1934, Dora Dufran passed away. She was laid to rest in Mount Moriah Cemetery in Deadwood. 🤠👇

"The infamous Dora Dufran was born Amie Helen Dorothea Bolshow in England in 1873 and immigrated to the United States with her parents, who settled in Nebraska. By 1889, she was married to Joseph Dufran and opened a brothel in Deadwood devoted to gambling, dancing, drinking, and "fancy entertainment" for its guests. Dufran operated two similar establishments in Belle Fourche and Rapid City, South Dakota, prior to 1917. After the closing of the houses in Rapid City, Dufran took up nursing and played an active role in helping the destitute and poor during the 1918 influenza epidemic. Several days after her death in 1934, the Rapid City Daily Journal wrote a half-page eulogy commemorating the life of Dufran. Today, Dufran is buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery beside her husband and pet parrot, Fred."

On this day in 1849, Seth Bullock was born. Bullock and his business partner, Sol Star, owned and operated the town’s first hardware store. But when it burned in 1894, they decided not to rebuild but construct Deadwood’s first hotel instead. The three-story, 64-room Bullock Hotel was the most luxurious of its time with steam heat and indoor bathrooms on each floor. The Bullock is still a Main Street fixture today. Seth Bullock is buried at the top of the hill in Deadwood’s Mount Moriah Cemetery. 🤠
