Tomorrow is Good Friday, but today is Thursday.
We don’t hear a lot about Thursday during Holy Week…. But. Thursday is significant. I’ll tell you why. The Last Supper.
You see, this is the day when Jesus knew his fate. He knew that he would be betrayed by the ones he had poured so much into. He knew what was coming in just a few short hours.
Matthew 26 tells us about the Last Supper. Throughout this chapter, it explains that Jesus broke the bread and gave thanks. Then, He passed around a cup and told them to all drink. This signifies the blood that will be shed for ALL sins. Your sins. My sins. Judas’s sins. Everybody's sins. The ultimate sacrifice.
He washed the feet of the ones who would betray him. How could one wash feet and be a servant to someone who would deny him? Jesus knew.
While eating, Jesus reveals that one of his disciplines will betray him. You all know who it is. Judas.
Jesus knew, but Judas ate too.
Jesus predicted that another disciple, Peter, would betray him three times. Peter insists that he never would. However, we read throughout the chapter that he does, in fact, betray him three times. Another betrayal.
Jesus was arrested, beaten, mocked, and spat on. Yet, he still paid the ultimate price for all of us. For our sins to be forgiven.
It is sometimes hard to comprehend this kind of love and sacrifice that was given on the night of the Last Supper. Why would he do it? I’ll tell you why. HE LOVES YOU! He loves his children.. So much that he died on the cross for each and everyone of us.. For our sins to be forgiven.
However, when I begin to think about it… I realized we are all like Judas. We have all betrayed Jesus at some point in our lives. Whether it be by not fasting, not praying, not being obedient, deceit, jealousy, envy, selfishness…. We have all acted like we didn’t know who Jesus was. We have all been somewhere where someone has mocked His word or made fun of us because we talk about what HE has done for us.
Jesus knew, but Judas ate too. And I am thankful that Jesus let Judas eat too.
Jesus knew we would betray him, but He still blesses us daily. He still performs miracles for our families. He still fills people with the Holy Ghost. He still brings lost loved ones home. He still works! He still does all of these things because He loves us!
Love your family. Love your friends. Love your pastor. Love each other. That’s what Jesus did.
It’s Thursday. But Sunday's coming.
