When reading scripture, I find it important to remind myself not to read them as though I am sitting on my couch (even if I am). For example, as I re-read Jonah's prayer this morning, feeling the previous lessons I have seen and coming to this next verse, I remember that Jonah is not speaking hypothetically.

From where he sits, in the belly of a fish/whale, he is dying. It doesn't smell good and he has NO solution to this situation. It is also completely and terrifyingly dark. There is no hope, well except ONE, and as he prays, it is clear that he becomes very convinced that his prayers are reaching God. Whether or not God answers them the way he wants them to be answered. Whether or not it feels like God is hearing, He is in fact hearing. And that is a lot of faith to have as you're slowly being digested by a fish's stomach fluids in the deep of the sea. A lot of God given faith, immediately after Jonah had exercised completely faithlessness in his actions.

God hears.
