To what extent are unconscious thoughts intentional? Unconscious thoughts can be intentional, because even though we aren't aware of them in the moment, they are driven by underlying personal beliefs, values, goals, habits, or motives. In fact, Unconscious thoughts are tied to our very self-identity. Some of our deepest unconscious thoughts and memories are held there as a defense mechanism like repression that protects our conscious mind. Research has shown that even repressed conditions can be activated by external stimuli and elicit actions and behaviors. So, things that we have deliberately hidden from ourselves unconsciously, can rise to the surface in seemingly unintentional ways.
