Dear Fr. Kuhlman Color Corps Members,

At last night's assembly meeting members engaged in a thoughtful discussion about the new uniforms. In particular we talked about the importance of the Color Corps (CC); the affect of declining Color Corps membership; the relationship of membership to the new uniform; the cost of the new uniform; and ways to overcome these problems. The conclusion was the Fr. Kuhlman assembly will offer current and prospective Color Corps members $100 assistance to purchase the new uniforms.

In return the assembly is asking that you present your paid bill/receipt to our Faithful Comptroller, Paul Dunigan, and pledge to continue in the CC in the future by attending future services/events. If you know a Fourth Degree member who is not currently in the CC, but has had thoughts of joining, all that needs to happen is for this SK to show their receipt to the comptroller and pledge to join the CC at upcoming practices and at future services/events.

As you may know, Supreme is currently offering a 25% reduction in the price of new uniforms. This brings the price to $382.50. With the $100 assistance from our assembly, the price is further reduced to $282.50. We encourage you to take advantage of these two offers and act immediately to acquire the new uniform. We do not know how long Supreme's 25% offer will last; it is currently listed on the Supreme web page as expiring at the end of October.

Our Color Corps is an important support service to our Catholic Churches and the communities where these parishioners live. In the last whole year of data, 2016, the Sir Knights of Father B. F. Kuhlman Assembly supported 102 services, events and functions. We supported 35 priests and religious, including supporting Archbishop Schnurr and Bishop Binzer on 23 occasions. We visited 43 different sites, including 28 different Churches in our area. Some of our support was for Holy Days and other special Masses, but we also supported funerals, Confirmations, Honor Flights, First Holy Communions, two priests' first Masses, ordinations, weddings, and other civic ceremonies.

Please sustain the vitality of our CC by visiting the Supreme web site (www.kofc.org) and follow the picture prompt to purchase your new uniform. We appreciate your support of our Church families, our priests and our Faith!

To my friends and fellow Sir Knights in the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus:

On this, the date of what would have been my father’s 95th birthday, I post an aging photograph of my father in the Official Uniform of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus as it was back in the early 1960s. Let me state something – this was the “official uniform”. My father was a Fourth Degree Knight from 1954 until his death in 2012. He never owned “regalia”, he was never Color Corps or Honor Guard, therefore never owned a cape. What he owned was the official uniform which at that time included the tuxedo, the military baldric and the sword, which I understand he got when he went through the exemplification in 1954.

I am a Past Grand Knight of Council 4587 in Miamisburg, Ohio, Former District Deputy #78, Former District Deputy #18 and current District Deputy #17, Past Faithful Navigator of Fr. B.F. Kuhlman Assembly #815 of Dayton, Ohio, Past Chapter President of the Greater Dayton Chapter of the Knights of Columbus, as well as a former Field Agent. I state this only to show that I have a track record of service in the K of C.

I thought of all of this when I looked at the picture of my dad tonight in uniform and I thought – “how the uniform has changed”. This year, it is again changing. Do I like it? I have to be honest – not really. I have a red cape and a white cape in my closet. I was hoping to stand behind my son at a 4th Degree exemplification and put my hand on his shoulder as he was made a Sir Knight while wearing my cape. I’m allowed to be disappointed the cape and chapeau will disappear – and so are you.

When we joined the Knights of Columbus, we promised to follow any lawful orders of our superiors. We don’t have to like the orders. What I am suggesting, and asking – as a Past Faithful Navigator – is to give this a chance. Buy the new uniform – don’t buy the new uniform – BUT stay in the Fourth Degree. We are the part of the Knights of Columbus that is most visible to the public. The Fourth Degree is my earliest memory of the Knights of Columbus. We are the PATRIOTIC arm of the Knights of Columbus. We visibly support our country, our flag, our men and women in the armed services, and our veterans. This is WHO WE ARE. This is WHAT WE DO.

We’re not about capes. We’re not about swords. We’re not about little medals of service on our tuxedos. We’re about standing up for our country and those that stood up for it. If you’re upset about the change – I understand. If you’re wanting to abandon the Fourth Degree because of it – please don’t. We’re about what we DO – not what we WEAR.

Thanks for listening.

Worthy Sir Knights of Father Kuhlman Assembly:

With great sadness we must announce the death of Reverend Christopher Coleman on July 9, 2017. Father Coleman, who most recently was the pastor of the Winton Wyoming Pastoral Region near Cincinnati, should also be remembered as the pastor of St. Anthony of Padua in Dayton. Father Coleman was a member of Dayton Council #500, and he was a Father B. F. Kuhlman Assembly Fourth Degree Sir Knight.

Reception of the Body followed by visitation will be held Thursday, July 13, 2017, 6:00-9:00 pm, St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, July 14, 2017, 10 am, St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, Cincinnati, Ohio.
There will be a private burial service at the request of the family.

NOTE: We need as many Sir Knights as possible as protocol requires four Sir Knights at the casket. The times noted above are the scheduled times and do not allow for our preparations. If you plan to participate in regalia, we ask you to arrive on Thursday by 5:00 PM and on Friday by 9:00 AM. We will dress in the undercroft for both services. Your attendance would be greatly appreciated!

Brothers of Father Kuhlman Assembly

We are going to try something new in order to stay sharp at church services when the Color Corps is involved. Beginning this coming Tuesday at 6:30 P.M., one hour prior to our assembly meeting, we will conduct a color corps practice at Bainbridge Hall. Please bring your sword, baldric and a (baseball) hat. The practice previous scheduled at Ascension for October has been canceled.

This is a trial run, but we believe the new date/time and condensed practice period has distinct advantages. In recent months primarily because our C.C. schedule has been so full, practices have been poorly attended. By combining the practice with the monthly assembly meeting, we hope to increase attendance at not only the practice session, but also the assembly business meeting. We believe practices are important because we always have issues to work on, and we always have new people wanting to join the C.C. If you have been thinking about participating in the C.C., please come to this practice. Another important group we hope will come to the practice is those SKs who may have been "dormant" in participating in the C.C. We want your participation again! Please join us!

Yes. This new schedule will require Sir Knights to come a bit early, but it will save a second trip to a local Church for a separate practice. Let's give it a try. We can always tweak the details.

Thank you for your support. If anyone has any questions, we would be glad to answer your them.
