Peace Grows When You Stop Making Everything About You
“An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.” ~ Proverbs 12:25
Peace often begins with a quiet decision: to stop assuming that every moment, every word, and every reaction is about us. Maturity teaches us a gentle truth. Most things are not personal.
When the driver cuts you off, it is not always an attack on your day. When an email is brief, it is not a verdict on your worth. Scripture reminds us, “A person’s steps are directed by the Lord” ~ Proverbs 20:24. Everyone is walking a path we cannot see, carrying burdens we do not know.
Even the friend who does not return a call may not be pulling away. They may be weary. Overwhelmed. Quietly struggling. The Word says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” ~ Galatians 6:2. But we cannot carry what we first refuse to recognize.
When we take everything personally, our hearts grow restless. We replay conversations. We write painful stories in our minds. Yet God invites us into a better way: “Let your gentleness be evident to all… Do not be anxious about anything” ~ Philippians 4:5–6. Gentleness begins when we release the need to interpret every moment through fear.
Learning not to take things personally is a spiritual discipline. It is choosing grace over suspicion. Trust over assumption. Love over offense. “Love keeps no record of wrongs” ~1 Corinthians 13:5.
And as we release what was never about us, something beautiful happens. Our hearts grow lighter. Our minds grow quieter. Our peace grows deeper.
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.” ~ Isaiah 26:3
Today, breathe. Release. Trust.
Not everything is about you!
And that truth is one of God’s greatest gifts of peace!
