Thursdays, Celebrate Recovery meets at 6:30 p.m. at the Dayton Christian Church, 520 Church St. Saturday is our church service at 6:00 p.m. Our service is only an hour. We like to have fun, worship with all our heart, and learn how to apply God's Word to our lives. Call 503-714-4432 or 503-857-6088 for more information. During the week our office next to the Center Mkt. in Dayton is open Tuesday through Thursday from 12:00 p.m. Come by anytime for a cup of coffee, good conversation, or prayer. We believe in one God who has expressed himself in personal ways. We know God's personality as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe the Bible communicates God's saving message and is our reliable authority in all matters related to faith and Christian living. We believe that all humankind struggles with a downward pull. We believe that unless we experience God's help and salvation through a faith commitment to Jesus Christ, our future is one of eternal separation from God and all that is good. We believe the love and grace of God is extended to every person in the provision Jesus Christ made in his death and resurrection. By turning from our own selfishness and trusting Jesus Christ, we experience a new life, being freed from the old patterns of self-destructive acts called sin. We believe our new life in Jesus Christ is the gateway to transformation. Following our moment of faith in Jesus, we believe there is another moment in which we present our life completely to Christ in order to live under his authority and to experience his transforming power. We believe that Christian experience is more than a change of mind. It is accompanied by assurance that is grounded in both the Scriptures as well as the inner witness of God's Spirit. We believe that all who live for Jesus Christ have an eternal future. Our belief in such a future includes both the fulfillment of God's creative purpose as well as the accountability of all persons endowed with the power of choice

June 5th
When things don’t go the way you planned or desired. REJOICE! Rejoice because you know that HE is in control!
Rejoice because He is making things happen according to His will.
Rejoice because things didn’t go as YOU planned, instead they are going to work into HIS plan! Our plan is not as good as His plan, so we pray and we do our part and then trust God with the rest of it! He is in control and is able and willing and WILL use it all for our good and His glory… every time! Even when we can’t see it or understand it.
We have to remember that the reality is that God is doing something so much bigger than we can fathom, realize or even imagine.
Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
Beyond our imagination! We can’t even think of the things He is doing, we are not even capable of wrapping our heads around it!
But we can trust that He is using everything for our good and His glory.
Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Even what the enemy means for evil, God will faithfully turn it for good just as He did in the life of Joseph.
Genesis 50:20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.
And just as in the life of Joseph, it was all woven into the perfect plan of God, even what the enemy meant for evil. Our King is has woven every choice of yours and mine and those around us into His perfect plan and nothing will happen or can happen without being turned into some glorious part of His plan. Even the hard stuff, the painful stuff, the mistakes and the surprises and the crazy stuff, none of it surprises Him, He knew it all before we were even born.
Psalm 139:16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
So when things don’t go the way YOU plan, REJOICE, because He has it all in HIS plan!
Jesus thank you for having a plan for me. Thank you for using everything in my life for good. Help me remember to REJOICE in the fact that you have it all in your plan for my good when things don’t go the way I want them to go. Thank you for always working on my behalf in ways that are beyond my imagination even when I don’t see or understand them. Thank you for your perfect love and perfect plan!

June 4th
It is easy to say anything but believing and walking in it is harder. The tool through it is the TRUTH. You are most tempted to quit right before the breakthrough.
The Truth of Psalm 23 is that He will take us THROUGH the valley of the shadow of death…not just to it, but THROUGH it! Don’t quit before you get through it!
Psalm 23:1-4 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Are you in the middle of a storm or a season of grief or pain? You are not alone, He is there with you right in the middle of it and He has no intention of leaving you there. He will also provide you with all that you need to survive. He will work miracles in your heart and mind. He will bring you through to the other side, closer to Him, knowing Him better and stronger in your faith. Are you feeling beaten down, discouraged, defeated or unsure you can make it any farther? Run to the “shadow of His wings” and find shelter in Him. He promises to be our shelter and protector.
Psalm 63:7-8 Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.
Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Are you weary?
Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Isaiah 41:13 For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.
Isaiah 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.
There is that word again…through. When we pass THROUGH the waters or the fire.
I seem to remember Him making a way THROUGH a rather large amount of water in the Old Testament…the Red Sea!
Jesus, Thank you for being my shield and protector. Thank you for being everything that I need to survive THROUGH this season. Help me to keep my eyes on you and look for your presence in the midst of my circumstances. Help me to find my safe space in the shadow of your wings. Help me to remember that I am not doing this alone and find strength in you. Thank you for the promises in your Word!

The conversation is between Jesus (“Master”) and Little James. (James the Lesser) James asks why he is being sent out to heal others when he himself has not been healed. Jesus explains that He could heal James, but chooses not to because He trusts him with a greater purpose. James’s suffering will become a powerful testimony: showing others how to remain faithful, praise God, and endure hardship with hope in eternity. Jesus reassures James that his worth is not based on physical strength or appearance, and that he will do great things despite his weakness. He promises that James will ultimately be healed in time, and that his faithfulness will have a lasting impact for generations.

Everyone has thoughts at some point that they are not going to be ok. But you have to know that you are and you are not alone in it! Not only do you have Jesus right there in the middle of it with you, you also have a church “family” that is with you! If you don’t speak up, who can be “with” you?
The Church was designed to function best as a community as a body, depending on each other. But this is not just because God knew we would need human contact for complete healing. He DESIGNED us that way! He created us to need HIM and to need each other for the best outcome. It is a part of His plan, it is part of HIS nature. He desires community (Father, Son, Holy Spirit).
Unloading our burden on Jesus can be done in the privacy of our own home in our prayer time with Him, and this is where we let Him fill us up as we pray, listen to Him, and read His Word. BUT… we heal best in community. He made the church to function together, that is why it is called the “body of Christ.” The Church as a whole functions better together.
1 Corinthians 12:25-27 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
We confess our sins and struggles to Jesus to be forgiven, but we confess them to each other so that we can pray for each other and be healed.
James 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
We are here for each other; this is not a solo flight that we are to navigate alone. Think about Moses:
Exodus 17:9-13 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.” So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.
Just as Aaron and Hur held up the arms of Moses when he was weary, so we are to be there for each other as the body of Christ, as the Church “family.”
1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
We are in this together! Reach out to someone today so we can be there for each other, this is crucial in the times ahead of us! There is strength in numbers…especially when Jesus is one of those in the number!
Jesus, thank you for being there for me always. Help me to be brave enough to lean not just on you but to reach out to my church family so that we can be there for each other. Help me to let you have my burdens and receive your strength. Show me how I can be there for my church family. Thank you for designing the Church to function the way you did instead of everyone being on their own. Thank you for your plan Jesus!

Don’t try to have more faith, just get to know Him better! When you know the One who controls the outcome you can rest in His plan for you. When you get to know Him better, you will know yourself better.
When you know Him better you will see things from His perspective and that changes everything in you.
When you know Him, it is easier to trust Him for things that are bigger than you can do yourself!
When you know Him, you reflect Him to others around you.
When you know Him, you can trust His love for you.
Since His love is perfect, He wants the best for you.
How well do you know Him?
Not just know about Him, but know Him? I know about President Trump, but I don’t really know Him. If you just know about Jesus but don’t really know Him then it will be harder for you to trust Him with your life every day. He doesn’t want to just be an acquaintance, He wants to be intimately involved in your life, as your closest friend and confidant.
John 15:15 “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”
You get to know someone you spend time with, and you get to know someone well that you spend time with everyday. God gave us the Holy Spirit to be with us everyday so that we can know Him. He will show Himself to us if we let Him.
John 16:13-15 “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
We spend time with Him by praying, reading the Word of God and talking/listening to Him every day. Don’t have time? We can’t afford to not do the things we don’t have time to do! This is crucial for our future, especially in these times! We are all in the same boat, we all have trouble finding time for spending with God, but we must get it on our schedule somehow. We must make it a priority. Our faith and our life depends on knowing Him well, and so does the life and faith of others around us because we can’t be the light if we don’t really know the source of Light, Jesus!
Jesus, thank you for calling me your friend. Help me to make time to spend with you so that I know you better. Show me creative ways how I can put more time for you into my day. Give me the strength and discipline to get up earlier or turn off the screens in my life to spend time with you. Thank you for your patience with me and your perfect love for me.

If we wait until we feel ready, we will never get it done. We can’t wait around to be perfect and we can’t wait around to feel ready. We weren’t created to wait around. We weren’t meant to be believers, we are meant to be followers, fruitful, with our light shining.
When something created isn’t being used for its purpose or isn’t useful then its purpose is wasted. Knick knacks on a shelf may be cute to look at briefly but unless they are being used for what they were created, they don’t hold much value. But God made you with value, to be used for His purpose and plan!
Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
We are meant to bear fruit!
John 15:5 & 8 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 8This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”
Jesus did instruct the disciples to wait, temporarily, before going to accomplish the mission that He gave them (and us.) That waiting period was brief and was in order to receive the baptism/outpouring of the Holy Spirit so that they would be empowered to complete the commission He gave us (Pentecost.)
Acts 1:4b-5,8 “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with a water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Verse 8-“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
But what did they do while they “waited?”
Acts 1:14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
So you see, waiting is not even JUST waiting!
Jesus thank you for creating me with a purpose, to be used by You. Help me to be willing and ready to be used. Show me what things in my heart and life may be hindering my usefulness. Help me to examine myself and be willing to surrender anything so that I am useful to you. Thank you for your perfect love and perfect plan Jesus.

May 31st
God does not wait until you are perfect to use you in His plan. He also does not wait for you to feel ready or feel worthy before He asks you to do something. Bottomline is that He doesn’t need us to FEEL, He just needs us to trust.
Do you trust the Creator of the Universe? Do you trust the One who parted the Red Sea, rose from the dead and raises the dead, walked on water and calms the waves, heals the blind and sick, fed thousands from 5 loaves and 2 fish, and created you and keeps His loving eye on you?
Although it is hard to wrap our human minds around His complex plan, and although it is hard for us to imagine how in the world the intricacies of our lives and personalities could play an important role in His plan, it is simple and easy for Him. He made the plan with all of our days and quirks woven into it, with all of our choices and mess ups covered by His grace and woven in it; and rather than waste anything, He uses those things for good.
Time to quit worrying about feeling ready or worthy. Time to trust. Time to step out in faith.
Time to see God’s plan through His eyes. Time to see yourself through His eyes. Time to prayerfully get out of the boat.
Matthew 14:22-33 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
We get to step out of the boat into the arms of Jesus! He did not ask Peter to step out on his own by himself. He asked Peter to join Him on the waves. This is what He is calling us to as well! He is calling us to step out in faith to walk WITH HIM! It is all by grace and through the work and power of the Holy Spirit for His own purpose and grace, all of which were determined and given to us before time began.
2 Timothy 2:9-10 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
Jesus thank you for calling me. Help me to remember that it is not about whether I feel ready or worthy. Help me to trust you. I believe but help my unbelief. Help me to keep my eyes on you and remember that your capable hands are holding me. Thank you for including me in your plan, help me to step out in faith.
