ST CLARE’S MIRACLE AT MIDNIGHT MASS

Clare was too ill to go to Midnight Mass services with her Sisters. She was too feeble to get out of bed. She lay there, her heart breaking as she was to be deprived of our Lord Jesus in the Eucharist on this special night. Her thoughts brought her back to the time in Greccio, when Francis made the first Nativity Scene, after which all Nativity scenes in the future would be fashioned. Christmas had always been a joyous time for both Clare and Francis. She missed not having him with her on earth, but especially at this, so important a time.

She looked about the bare room that served as the sleeping quarters for the Sisters. Suddenly, there was a great light in the room. She could hear the sounds of Christmas hymns being sung at the great Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi. She felt herself being lifted out of her bed. The cool breeze of the December night brushed across her face; she was transported to the church amidst what sounded to her like the voices of angels. She could smell the sweet fragrance of burning candles, and altar incense. She was taking part in the Midnight Mass at the Basilica.

Then she was whisked off to the east, to the Bethlehem of 1200 years before. She was brought down to the cave where the Infant Jesus was born. St. Joseph and Mary were there, in the company of the animals whose cave the Holy Family shared. Our Lord Jesus came to her as a grown man, and placed the Sacred Host in her mouth.

Then she was transported back to the convent of San Damiano in Assisi. When her daughters in Christ came back upstairs from the Church, their joy was overshadowed by the great sorrow they felt because their Mother had missed the beautiful service. She smiled weakly. Her face was flushed, but not from the illness. She told them of her experience, and how the Lord Himself had given her Communion. They sat by her bed listening and smiling. As they all fell off into a peaceful Christmas slumber, the soft, distant sound of angels singing Gloria in Excelsis Deo could be heard.

A SOBERING STORY ON UNREPENTANT MORTAL SIN

St. Antoninus relates, in his writings, a terrible fact which, about the middle of the fifteenth century, spread fright over the whole North of Italy. A young man of good stock, who, at the age of 16 or 17, had had the misfortune of concealing a mortal sin in confession, and, in that state, of receiving Communion, had put off from week to week, month to month, the painful disclosure of his sacrileges. Tortured by remorse, instead of discovering with simplicity his misfortune, he sought to gain quiet by great penances, but to no purpose.

Unable to bear the strain any longer, he entered a monastery; there, at least, he said to himself, I will tell all, and expiate my frightful sins. Unhappily, he was most welcomed as a holy young man by his superiors, who knew him by reputation, and his shame again got the better of him. Accordingly, he deferred his confession of this sin to a later period; and a year, two years, three years, passed in this deplorable state; he never dared to reveal his misfortune.

Finally, sickness seemed to him to afford an easy means of doing it. “Now is the time,” he says to himself; “I am going to tell all; I will make a general confession before I die.” But this time, instead of frankly and fairly declaring his faults, he twisted them so artfully that his confessor was unable to understand him.

He hoped to come back again the next day but an attack of delirium came on, and the unfortunate man died. The community, who were ignorant of the frightful reality, were full of veneration for the deceased. His body was borne with a certain degree of solemnity into the church of the monastery, and lay exposed in the choir until the next morning when the funeral was to be celebrated.

A few moments before the time fixed for the ceremony, one of the Brothers, sent to toll the bell, saw before him, all of a sudden, the deceased, encompassed by chains, that seemed aglow with fire, while something blazing appeared all over his person. Frightened, the poor Brother fell on his knees, with his eyes riveted on the terrifying apparition. Then the damned soul said to him: “Do not pray for me, I am in here for all eternity;” and he related the sad story of his false shame and sacrileges. Thereupon, he vanished, leaving in the church a disgusting odor, which spread all over the monastery, as if to prove the truth of all the Brother just saw and heard. Notified at once, the Superiors had the co**se taken away, deeming it unworthy of ecclesiastical burial.

⚜️ REFLECTION
If we humbly present ourself before Our Lord, His mercy is bountiful. Don’t think of the Priest as a man - one who is going to judge and mock you. See instead Christ, a loving father who only wants your repentance.

Join us for this novena. Ite ad Joseph!

Starts Today! The FSSP is starting a novena to St. Joseph in light of the Traditiones Custodes Moto propio (maybe add at the end of your daily rosary?):

In light of the Traditiones Custodes Motu proprio, we ask that you join the Fraternity of St. Peter in praying the following novena from the 22nd (Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary) to the 30th of August for the intention of the Holy Father, the FSSP community and apostolates, and more generally for all those attached to the "Extraordinary Form":

Prayer to Saint Joseph:

Unto thee, O Blessed Joseph, do we fly in our tribulation and, having implored the help of thy most holy Spouse, we now confidently seek thy protection.

By that charity which united thee to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and by thy fatherly love for the Child Jesus, we humbly beg thee to look graciously upon the inheritance which Jesus Christ hath purchased with His Blood, and in our need to help us by thy powerful intercession.

Do thou, O prudent guardian of the Holy Family, watch over the chosen people of Jesus Christ. Keep us, O most loving father, from all blight of error and corruption. O most mighty protector, from thy place in Heaven, graciously help us in this our conflict with the powers of darkness.

And as of old thou didst rescue the Child Jesus from the supreme peril of His life, so now defend God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity.

Extend to each one of us thy continual protection, that led on by thine example, and strengthened by thine aid, we may lead a holy life, and die in holiness, and obtain everlasting happiness in Heaven. Amen.

In your charity please pray for the healing of Fr. Christopher Mahowald FSSP:

In your charity please pray for the healing of Fr. Christopher Mahowald FSSP:

Pray for dear Fr. Christopher Mahowald FSSP. He is very very sick with COVID, intubated in a hospital in Scranton, PA where he recently moved (from St Anne’s, San Diego). He was going to be pastor in this new assignment. He is the priest on the far right.

Fr. Christopher Mahowald is from Omaha, Nebraska. He is the sixth child of a family of eight. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 28th, 2016 after 7 years of studies at Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Denton, Nebraska with the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. Fr. Mahowald began going to the Latin Tridentine mass in 1992 when he was ten years old at St. Patrick's Parish in South Omaha. During his teenage years he was very active in the parish, serving Mass and as a member of the Legion of Mary. This work in the Legion was particularly important to him; visiting the sick and elderly in the hospitals, nursing homes, or shut ins, as well as going door-to-door in the neighborhoods of South Omaha trying to bring others to the Catholic Faith. After High School Fr. Mahowald worked as a cabinetmaker at a local shop and remained in the trade until he entered the seminary in 2009.
