Does the Savior get all the credit for a persons salvation? In a sense yes, without the sacrifice there would be no salvation, but what about the Father? The Spirit? What about the person being saved? Does a person have a role to play? If not, we all go to heaven. If a person has a role to play, what is it?

A person must first receive the Savior and believe on His name, but what does that mean, and does it stop there?

Joh 1:12 ASV But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Joh 1:13 ASV who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

A person that receives Christ and believes on His name is given power to become a child of God.
Not because they were born in the flesh, or because of a bloodline, but because they were born of God. John clarifies this by a discourse Jesus had with Nicodemus.

Joh 3:3 ASV Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Nicodemus doesn't understand how to be born again and asks for clarity.

Joh 3:4 ASV Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

Jesus clarifies.

Joh 3:5 ASV Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

According to Luke, Peter testifies to this in Acts chapter 2. Peter preached Christ to the crowd, and when they believed (pricked in their heart) they asked what they needed to do.

Act 2:37 ASV Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do?
Act 2:38 ASV And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Sounds like water and spirit. In verse 40 Peter told them to save themselves (I guess a person does have a role to play), this doesn't mean they were saved without Christ or what He did for them. It means they were able to wash away a lifetime of sin, and get added to the church, because of what Christ did for them (and for us).

Act 2:41 ASV They then that received his word were baptized: and there were added unto them in that day about three thousand souls.

But it didn't stop there. Their lives changed.

Act 2:42 ASV And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and the prayers.

To call on the name of the Lord is make an appeal to Him. We do this through baptism.

Act 22:16 ASV And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on his name.

Have you received the apostles' doctrine? Have you appealed to God? If not, why not now?

Isa 55:6 KJV Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:

A commonly misunderstood passage of scripture.

Eph 2:8 KJV For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Eph 2:9 KJV Not of works, lest any man should boast.

This passage tells us 3 things.
1. What saves us.
2. The manner in which it saves us.
3. Where it comes from.
What it doesn't say, is that we have no role to play in our salvation.

1. We are saved by grace. Grace is not of yourselves. Grace is the gift of God. Grace is not of (human) works lest anyone should boast.
2. Grace saves us through faith. Faith is the manner by which grace saves us.
What does faith do? Romans 5:1-2 tells us faith justifies, faith gives us peace with God, and faith gives us access into God's saving grace.
So what is faith? Faith is how we respond to God. Faith is believing God is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him (Heb 11:6). We have many examples of faith in Heb 11. v2, elders obtained a good report. How? Through faith. Notice the good report was something the elders obtained, it was not given to them.
v17-19, by faith Abraham offered up Isaac. According to James 2:21, this act of obedience (faith) is what justified Abraham (Romans 5:1-2).
3. Grace comes from God. God is love (1 John 1:6). Therefore God's grace is an expression of His love. God's grace hasn't appeared because of anything we've done. It is a gift from God.

Faith is our response to what God has already done.
Grace is God doing His part. Faith is us doing ours.
We do have a role to play in our salvation, it's called faith.

Mat 13:20 ASV And he that was sown upon the rocky places, this is he that heareth the word, and straightway with joy receiveth it;

Sounds like a believer.

Mat 13:21 ASV yet hath he not root in himself, but endureth for a while; and when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightway he stumbleth.

Luke records it this way.

Luk 8:13 ASV And those on the rock are they who, when they have heard, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

Jesus is the head of the church universal (Col 1:18). Jesus is not one of a plurality of men overseeing a local congregation (Titus 1:5).

Paul suggested celibacy for the Christian with self control (1 Cor 7:7-9), so they can better seek to please the Lord (1 Cor 7:32-33). Just because the celibate Christian can better seek to please God in their personal life doesn't mean that qualifies them to be an elder/bishop, but according to other writings of Paul, it means the opposite.

Can the church disregard all the requirements of 1 Tim 3:1-7 when selecting an elder/bishop, or just the married father part?

John 12:42-43 ASV Nevertheless even of the rulers many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: for they loved the glory that is of men more than the glory that is of God.

Are these believers saved? Will Christ confess these believers before His Father.

Mat 10:33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father who is in heaven.

John 3:16 says whosoever believes "in" Him should be saved. The Greek word translated "in" is eis (Strong's G1519). The KJV translates Strong's G1519 in the following manner: into (573x), to (281x), unto (207x), for (140x), in (138x), on (58x), toward (29x), against (26x), miscellaneous (322x).
εἰς, a preposition governing the accusative, and denoting entrance into, or direction and limit: into, to, toward, for, among.

So to believe "in" Christ, is to believe toward Christ. The journey isn't over until we reach the end. That is when we will receive our crown (2 Tim 4:8 and 1 Cor 9:25), not before. If your belief in Christ isn't leading you to obedience, your faith is vain (1 Cor 15:1-2 and James 2:26).

Jesus is warning us, Matt 7:21-23.

Some say Heb 10:10 teaches the sacrifice of Christ saves us once and for all, and therefore we can never lose salvation. Not only is this not what the verse teaches, it doesn't even say it.

Heb 10:8, God didn't take pleasure in the sacrifices under the law of Mosses.
Heb 10:9, Christ came to do the will of God, which was to take away the first (law of Mosses), that He may establish the second (law of Christ).
Heb 10:10, by the will of establishing the second (law of Christ), we are sanctified through the offering Christ made once. This is in contrast to the offerings under the law of Mosses in v11,
when priest had make the same sacrifices again and again.

The purpose of the Hebrew letter was to deter Hebrews who became Christians from going back to Judaism. If they're saved for ever, what's wrong with going back to Judaism?

The church in Ephesus, which had been saved by grace through faith (Eph. 2:8-9; Acts 19:1-7), left its first love, and so fell, and was in danger of being wholly disowned by Christ (Rev. 2:4-5).

Colossions 1 verse 23a, IF you continue in THE faith. This is referring to the new testament system of faith which is a law (Romans 3:27, Romans 8:2).

When Paul prays for the church in verses 9-12, he prays that they...

9, be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and understanding

10, walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful and increasing in the knowledge of God.

11, be strengthened unto patience and longsuffering with joyfulness

12, thank the Father who made us meet (to make sufficient, render fit) to be partakers of the inheritance.

We can only do these things by spending time in God's word and letting it teach us to see things as God sees them (Romans 12:1-2). This is walking in the light, which we must do if we're to be cleansed by the blood of Christ (1 John 1:7).

Doing these things isn't being saved by works, it is being saved by faith.

Verse 23b, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel. This means once saved ISN'T always saved. We must have something before we can be moved away from it.

Paul told the church at Corinth that he brings his body into subjection so he himself won't be cast away (1 Cor 9:23-27), and told them (2 Cor 13:5) to examine themselves whether they're in THE faith.

In Rev 3:1-6 John relays a message to the Lord's church in Sardis.

Notice this message is for the church. These are people who heard the word (Romans 10:17), believed the word and confessed Christ (Romans 10:9-10), then repented and were emersed for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38-41).

According to Rev 3:3, many were no longer watching for the Lord's return (Matt 24:42), which means they still attended worship services, but went back to living in the world. Paul warned the church in Rome about this in Romans 12:1-2.

In Rev 3:5 John writes those who overcome (the world) will be clothed in white raiment, not those who believe only, or said a prayer 30 years ago, but those who overcome. In order for our names to be blotted out of the Book of Life, it must first be written in the Book of Life. To say once someone is saved they can't be lost is contrary to this message and many others. To say they were never really saved is to say God made a mistake when He wrote their names in the Book of Life.

There are many examples of apostasy in the new testament. No man can cut the branch from the vine, but God can and will if we don't continue to grow and mature in knowledge and understanding of Him and His word to become stronger and more faithful Christians (bear fruit-John 15:1-6). Or do you believe God can't cut the branch from the vine?

Judge not, least you be judged. Do people who say this really know what it means? Do they understand what they are teaching when they say it? Do they even know where it is in the Bible? Judge not, lest you be judged is Matt 7:1. We need to be mindful that the original text has no chapters or verses so we need to make sure we understand the context before we quote scripture. If someone doesn't like what you're saying and quotes Matt 7:1, what they mean is leave me alone I don't want to hear it. But what they're teaching, even if they don't realize it, is if you don't pass judgement on others God won't judge you. Jesus said in John 12:48 "the word that I have spoken, the same will judge you in the last day". So in the last day I'll be judge by the word of God regardless of what people say or teach. Hebrews 4:12 says the word of God is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. The Greek word translated discerner is kritikos which means fit for judging. 2 Tim 3:16 says the word of God is profitable for correction. John 7:24 says "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment". So it sounds to me that we are commanded to judge (if it be righteous judgement.) If you continue reading Matt 7 through verse 5 you'll understand He's talking about hypocritical judgement. Fix the sin in your own life before casting judgement on others is the message being taught. Romans 2:1-3 also condemns hypocritical judgement.

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workmen that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Tim 2:15.
