We launched a new series in our weekly Shabbat Study: Encountering the Holy.

"By reconnecting with our roots, we come to a much-needed understanding of and distinction between the holy and the profane, the sacred and the secular.

That is the point of this study. We want to know the mind of Messiah Yeshua when he taught us to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. To do so, we must return to the prophets of Israel and hear them with new ears."

Without a biblical revelation, God’s people go astray; they cast off restraints; they perish. We need new revelation and fresh insight into what it means to truly have and live a biblical lifestyle.

"You are living from God’s approval, not for it. That is the glorious truth."

Here is the conclusion of this study: The better you understand God's grace, the more adept you become at receiving and working with that grace.

If there is any place in all the Bible where you see a God who is patient, kind, and compassionate, it is in the Old Testament, the Bible of Jesus and his earliest followers. It is in His dealings with Israel. He is a God who literally bends over backwards for His covenant people, urging, beckoning, calling, waiting for them to turn around, repent, and come back to Him.

Let's watch grace at work in one of my favorite chapters, Exodus 34. Mark this passage, memorize it if you're able. This is God in truth, without distortion.

If you want to avoid the perils of perfectionism as you follow Jesus, then you need to know what God’s grace actually is. When we understand how it operates in our lives, we can cooperate with its work in and through us. That is the goal of our study.

Our forefather in the faith, James, coaches us to: Submit yourselves to God (4:7). What is the result? Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. In case we missed his logic, he tells us again how we are to push back against darkness: Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you (4:8).

Next week begins the biblical Fall Feast cycle, an annual opportunity to draw near! This time is divinely designed to rekindle first love and a commitment to following hard after Jesus.

"God made Himself known as the Shepherd of Israel. Jesus made himself known as the Good Shepherd. Like Father, like Son. So far, so good.

Now, how about his followers, the flock he would be entrusting with his kingdom movement?"

"Salvation is a gift, but discipleship is a walk. We must grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Master to be wholly free... We can be filled with scholarly information and still be terribly bound by the brokenness of our souls and lives. An intimate, obedient and disciplined relationship with God is the 'knowledge' that truly sets us free."
