We launched a new series in our weekly Shabbat Study: Encountering the Holy.

"By reconnecting with our roots, we come to a much-needed understanding of and distinction between the holy and the profane, the sacred and the secular.

If there is any place in all the Bible where you see a God who is patient, kind, and compassionate, it is in the Old Testament, the Bible of Jesus and his earliest followers. It is in His dealings with Israel. He is a God who literally bends over backwards for His covenant people, urging, beckoning, calling, waiting for them to turn around, repent, and come back to Him.

Our forefather in the faith, James, coaches us to: Submit yourselves to God (4:7). What is the result? Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. In case we missed his logic, he tells us again how we are to push back against darkness: Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you (4:8).

Next week begins the biblical Fall Feast cycle, an annual opportunity to draw near! This time is divinely designed to rekindle first love and a commitment to following hard after Jesus.
