In the Bible, joy is a deep, lasting spiritual delight and strength, distinct from fleeting happiness, rooted in God and His promises, not circumstances, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, allowing believers to rejoice even amid suffering as a fruit of faith and hope in salvation. It's an enduring attitude of trust and a gift from God, expressed through thankfulness, hope, and an active relationship with Jesus, even when facing trials.
Key Aspects of Biblical Joy:
Source: A gift from the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and God's presence (Psalm 16:11).
Not Circumstantial: It persists through hardship, sorrow, and persecution, unlike worldly happiness.
Rooted in Faith: It comes from trusting God's promises and His plan, viewing trials as tests that build character (Romans 5:2-5, James 1:2-3).
Enduring Hope: It's an everlasting hope found in salvation and Jesus's resurrection, promising future glory.
A Way of Being: It's a lifestyle, a lens to see the world, and a choice to be faithful, not just a temporary feeling.
Expressions: Involves singing, praising, and exultation (Isaiah 35:10, Psalm 126:5).
Luke 1:39-45
39At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
