Lutheran Church of the Incarnation

Lutheran Church of the Incarnation ELCA Lutheran congregation. Open and welcoming of all people regardless of background. What does this mean? Gifts, you may ask?

We are a RECONCILING IN CHRIST community

We at Lutheran Church of the Incarnation strive to become the living embodiment of Christ by creating a loving, welcoming, and inclusive community. We acknowledge that as human beings we all fall short in accepting people who are different from ourselves. We believe we are challenged by Christ to care for, to love, to respect, and to listen to all. This Af

firmation of Welcome includes, but is not limited to race, age, marital or economic status, physical or mental abilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, or personal history. We struggle to better understand the mysteries of God's teachings and welcome all to join us as we grow together in Christ to witness and serve. If you wish to learn more about what it means to be a Reconciling in Christ community, we invite you to call and speak with Pastor Dan or visit the web site of Lutherans Concerned / North America. Incarnation is one of 10,500 congregations which make up the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (www.elca.org), locally organized into 215 congregations in northern California and northern Nevada through the Sierra Pacific Synod (www.spselca.org). As Lutheran Christians, we celebrate:

Jesus Christ
Justification by grace through faith
The Sacraments of Baptism and Communion
Studying the Bible
Worship as central in our life together
Service to the larger community
Vibrant music
The "Priesthood of all Believers"

OK, everything probably made sense until you got to the "Priesthood of All Believers," right? At Incarnation, it means we are seeking to be a community of faith which welcomes and celebrates the gifts of all kinds of people. Yes, gifts – the gifts and abilities we believe we have been given to use every day to God’s glory. We believe it isn’t just "the pastor’s job" to offer ministry – it’s the job of all of us! Do you know what your gifts and abilities are? The link below will lead you in answering a series of questions about the skills and abilities you possess, and your enjoyment in sharing those gifts through your work, friendships or community service. It doesn’t take much time, and the results of this survey will be known only to you. Take a few moments and see what surprises you might find. http://www.elca.org/evangelism/assessments/spiritgifts.html

If you would like to learn more about how Incarnation is celebrating the gifts of its members and friends, look at the many ministries we offer. None of these ministries could happen without the efforts and talents of people who are willing to share their gifts. We’re glad you stopped by, and hope your visit will be a way to discover more about our community of faith. If you have any difficulty finding the information you’re looking for, or if you’d like more information than the website can provide, please feel free to e-mail our Pastor at [email protected]. We are located in Davis on the northwest corner of Russell Boulevard and Arthur Street, just west of Highway 113. Click here for a map and directions to LCI.

In 1521, Martin Luther stood before Charles the V, the Holy Roman Emperor, in the German city of Worms. Things had heated up considerably after he demanded the church stop stealing money from German peasants using indulgences – pieces of paper sold to people by indulgence peddlers, sanctioned by the church, which supposedly let them or their relatives out of purgatory (sort of like the waiting room for hell). Really it was a money making scam and a form of spiritual abuse, and Luther called B.S. That did not make him popular with the "powers that be", but that didn't matter.

He had become a folk hero; people lined the streets to cheer him on as he made his way to Worms. The power of empire and the Roman church was allied against him in that moment. At the Imperial Diet, they asked him if he would recant. He reportedly said: “unless I am convinced by Scripture or plain reason, I cannot and I will not recant of anything I have written. My conscience is captive to the Word of God. Here I stand, I can do no other. God help me.”

In other words, before the most powerful man in the world and his theological enablers, Luther answered with one word: NO. The “DNA” of the Lutheran Christian movement began in that moment of faith-rooted resistance to worldly power, to lies and fear, and it is a source of strength at all times, but especially at a time like this. You may have heard about criticism of Lutheran social service agencies by some in the federal government in the last few days. The ELCA Presiding Bishop, Rev. Elizabeth Eaton has responded here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Liqz0VdZG1E.

Please keep the church and the world in your thoughts and prayers as we go through this moment. As Luther bore witness, faith in God’s grace lives in our hearts; it is promised to us in baptism, and no one can take that away from us. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, the church is the church only when it exists for others. We will never stop proclaiming God’s grace in Jesus Christ, loving our neighbor or caring for their needs, and we will not bow down to lies or baseless fears because we know that “there is no fear in love, for perfect love casts out all fear” (1 John 4:18).

Stay strong, church – God is still in charge.

PUB THEOLOGY: Join Pastors Dan and Portia in a conversation at Pub(lic) Theology this evening (Tuesday Feb. 4) at Pizza and Pints on 3rd and B St. in Davis at 7:00pm. Our topic is: What is “Common Good” and how can attention to this help enable hope and healing? Attached is an article that might be helpful to start our conversation.

Our plan is to continue pub theology the first and third Tuesdays; consider it “on” unless you hear otherwise. We will do our best to stay in touch about details. Let me know if you have any questions, and we hope to see you tonight!

A definition and analysis of the common good approach to ethics.
