Sergeant Dennis Charles Hurley went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on September 11, 1946 in Emmett, WV the beloved son of the late George Hurley and Maxine (Elba) Taylor. A proud 1965 graduate of Man High School, Dennis enlisted in the United States Army, serving with distinction in the 82nd Airborne Division. His military service included two tours in Vietnam. After returning home, Dennis spent 30 years as an electrician in the coal mining industry. He was a dedicated member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) for 30 years, serving in numerous capacities including Commander of his local chapter and WV State Treasurer. Dennis also proudly served as an Honor Guard and was active in the VFW, American Legion, and Vietnam Veterans of America. Dennis had a big heart and spent many hours volunteering at VA hospitals. He fought hard for veterans' rights and benefits, pushing for bills that helped countless veterans. But the times he cherished most were spent with his family, whether camping and fishing at Smith Mountain Lake or sitting by a campfire at his Greenbrier River camper. His greatest joy came from sharing his faith and talking about his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Sergeant Dennis Charles Hurley fought the good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Dennis is preceded in death by his brothers Bruce Hurley, Ronald Hurley, and Billy Ray Hurley, as well as his mother-in-law Letha Thompson. He is survived by his wife of nearly fifty-six years, and the love of his life, Deanna Lea Hurley. Together they raised four children: Travis (Tonya) Hurley of Man, Kim Stewart of Oceana, Leann (Randy) Crouse of Cyclone, and Tim (Stephanie) Hurley of Glen Fork. Dennis is also mourned by special family friends Sarah Patrick and William Elkins, both of Oceana. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren and their families: Brittany (Jason) Smith, Travis Charles (Mikayla) Hurley II, Casey Hurley, Cody (April) Stewart, Tanner (Tory) Stewart, Charlie (Kaci Ellison) Stewart, Kerri (Nathen) Short, Katie (Zach) Belcher, Malerie Crouse, Jacob (Heather) Crouse, Duke Hurley, Sophie Hurley, and Oliver Hurley, his great-grandchildren include Mason, Grayson, and Celia Dea Short Wesley, Hayden, and Aubree Godfrey Ryder Belcher Rylee Crouse Braylee Walker Joy Stewart Kaitlyn Roberts Hunter Bailey Kruz and Kolt Stewart Cannon and C**t Smith Liam Ava Jewel and Travis Charles Hurley III, his great-great-grandchildren are Sawyer and Laramie Roberts, and Kaysyn Bailey, his two sisters, Violet (Butch) Toth and Georgia (Danny) Layne, a brother, Michael (Kim) Hurley, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral service will be held at 8 pm on Thursday, August 8th at the Campus Church of God, Campus, WV with Minister John Hawkins officiating. Friends may gather with the family from 6 pm until time of service on Thursday at the church. The Wyoming County Veterans Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites. In keeping with his wishes he will be cremated following the service. The family is being served by the Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV.
