The Heart Healer

He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted. ~Isaiah 61:1

Self-help magazines often include an article in their December editions for those battling the Christmas blues. Despite the merriment of the season, many people feel left out, especially if they can't be with loved ones. The gray weather and colder temperatures can make things worse, along with financial stresses. Too much food and drink can cause problems, and the poignant nostalgia of Christmas can leave us wistful and downcast.

Yet Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted! He came to heal you!

Isaiah predicted this aspect of Christ's coming in Isaiah 61, and in His first known sermon following He baptism, Jesus quoted this verse with the claim it belonged to Him, that He was the fulfillment of Isaiah 61m and that He Himself had come to heal the brokenhearted.

What great news!

If you feel downcast today, imagine the Lord Jesus Christ, coming from heaven, taking on the form of a baby, growing up, and becoming the Savior, whose mission was to encourage, uplift, undergird, and restore your spirits.

Jesus came down that you might be cheered up. Welcome Him today!

Startled and Strengthened

Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you. ~Luke 1:28

Those words -- Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you -- started Mary. She had no idea anyone was nearby. Whether she was at the village well, on a leisurely walk, or in her home, we don't know. But she was definitely not alone! The angel Gabriel, who had appeared hundreds of years before to Daniel, appeared to her out of nowhere. His first word was a command -- Rejoice! His next words were one of grace: highly favored one. The next thing he said was a fact -- the Lord is with you.

There's only one virgin Mary, but on the basis of other Scriptures throughout the Word of God, we can claim those words for ourselves. We're told in Philippians 4:4 to rejoice! Psalm 5:12 says that God surrounds us with favor "as with a shield." And dozens of Scriptures remind us of the Lord's presence with us. Isaiah 41:10 says, "Fear not, for I am with you." Just as the Lord was with Mary when she became Jesus' mother, so He is with us -- giving us the strength we need for the tasks we face and the burdens we bear.

Let that message startle you -- and strengthen you!

Revelation and Response

So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, "Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to use." ~Luke 2:15

"Call and response" is one way a speaker or singer engages with an audience. "Can I get a witness?" is a call, and "Amen!" is a response. Call and response is also used in music in both sacred and secular settings. It's a way to keep the audience interested and involved.

At the heart of God's interaction with mankind is "revelation (call and response." An example of revelation and response occurred in the Bethlehem hills when an angel announced the birth of Jesus to a group of shepherds. That was the revelation -- the response was when the shepherds left "with haste" (Luke 2:16) and went to Bethlehem to find the newborn Baby. Their response of obedience led to their blessing of meeting the Messiah. The purpose of all God's revelation is blessing, but revelation must be followed by response on our part.

Whatever God reveals to you today, make haste to obey. There is always a blessing to follow.

Lotta Hope!

The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; in him the Gentiles will hope. ~Romans 15:12, NIV

In 2022, the Mega Millions lottery reached a jackpot of over one billion dollars as people everywhere lined up for tickets. Jonathan Cohen is a lottery historian -- yes, there is such a thing -- and he told reporters the reason is because people need hope. In a time of inflation and economic stress, the fantasy of becoming super rich was driving more than half of American adults to enter a lotter.

The chance of winning the lottery is one in hundreds of millions. The possibility of finding real hope in Christ is one hundred percent. There is total hope in Him -- hope for a confident life and hope for a continual future. It wasn't random chance but divine design that sent us a Baby whose every heartbeat spells hope.

Without the birth of Christ, we wouldn't have salvation from sin and the certainty of eternity in heaven with our Heavenly Father. Thank God for the hope Christmas brings!

Lifelong Faithfulness

From my mother's womb You have been My God. ~Psalm 22:10

Psalm 22 is an oil painting, as it were, of Jesus Christ, drawn a thousand years before His birth. It is sheer prophecy, and it focuses on the Lord's suffering on the cross, describing how His hands and feet were pierced (verse 16), His garments were divided by His enemies (verse 18), and His cry pierced the air, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" (verse 1)

But the writer also looks back with great reassurance of God's lifelong faithfulness to Him. "You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother's breasts. I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother's womb You have been My God" (verses 9-10).

Psalm 22 is not simply a prophecy of our Lord's death. It also describes His godly heritage, His wonderful mother, and His lifelong experience of God's favor and grace.

When you face a crisis that makes you feel forsaken, remember God's goodness to you throughout the months, years, and decades. Recall how He has taught you to trust in Him. Think of the entirety of our Lord's life -- from crib to cross to grave to throne. Say to Him afresh, "O Lord, You are my Lord. You have been, and are, and always will be my God!"

Yes, He Can!

So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet. ~Matthew 1:22

Publisher Jack Countryman wrote, "God planned the birth of Jesus before time began, and throughout the Old Testament -- thousands of years before a Baby was born in Bethlehem -- God hinted about the coming of this Messiah, this King of kings, Lord of Lords, Prince of Peace. Looking at these hints -- these ancient prophecies -- and their fulfillment in the New Testament accounts of Jesus' birth can help us recapture the wonder of the Christmas story and marvel at the gift of Jesus."

"Seeing the promises of God and their fulfillment," said Countryman, "[reignites in us] the very hope of Christmas."

Yes, it does!
Jesus' birth brought hope and salvation to mankind. And as Christians, this hope gives us the strength to persevere through trials and to be joyful during times of despair. If the Lord spent thousands of years planning one birthday, don't you think He can care for you?

Yes, He can!
