When did you last interact with a nun or brother?

Did you know that we have a cloistered order in our diocese? The Discalced Carmelites who now live in Clinton are technically a cloistered order.

There's also another one up the road, the Trappistines of Our Lady of the Mississippi Abbey, Dubuque, well known for their Monastery carmels and chocolates!

Today on the Memorial of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in the Temple, the Church celebrates , an ecclesial event for all Catholics to commemorate the hidden lives of cloistered and monastic religious.

A few years ago, at a general audience in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis reminded the Church, “Let us give thanks to the Lord for the powerful testimony of cloistered life.” He also urged the faithful to lend their spiritual and material support to these brothers and sisters of ours “so that they can carry out their important mission.”

Consider saying an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for all cloistered and monastic religious.

Dedicated Single Life...
Some people serve God as single people, without marrying or making special vows. While not a "vocation" in a strict theological sense, single people "contribute greatly to the good of the human family" (CCC 2231). "Some live their situation in the spirit of the Beatitudes, serving God and neighbor in exemplary fashion" (CCC 1658). There are many single people who serve the a Church with incredible generosity.

Priesthood and Diaconate...
Priests bring Jesus to people and people to Jesus through preaching and the sacraments. Priests are very active as they counsel people, teach classes, prepare homilies, administer parishes, and much more. Many surveys show that priests are among the happiest people in the world!

Deacons too share in the sacrament of Holy Orders. Depending on the parish, deacons proclaim the Gospel, deliver homilies, perform baptisms and weddings, visit the sick, distribute the Eucharist, teach the faith, and generally assist the pastor. The wife of each deacon is also formed in support of her husband's call to serve the Church.

What clergy, priests or deacons, have had an impact on your life?
