Church of the Island family,

This coming Monday is Labor Day, a time we set aside to appreciate workers and the value that they add to our nation. According to a recent World Economic Forum report, the United States currently accounts for more than 12% of the world’s GDP growth. Our technological innovations are unmatched, our labor market is tight, and the dollar remains the world’s reserve currency. We truly do live in a great country, where we can find success in our vocation if we are willing to apply ourselves and work hard.

I Peter 4:10 tells us, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”

This verse should remind us that whether we work in an office, at home, in the community, or in ministry – whatever we do is a chance to use our talents and resources for God's glory.

As we approach this weekend, reflect on your own stewardship of God's grace. Thank Him for your gifts and talents. Rest in Him, knowing that your efforts, no matter how insignificant they may seem, are a vital part of God's work in this world.

Please know that I prayed for you today... that this weekend would be a time of refreshment and encouragement for you. And thank you for your hard work and faithfulness to connect people to Jesus and one another in our community!

Church of the Island family,

I recently came across some home video recordings from my childhood days. Each scene brought the past more vividly back to life. I felt the excitement of catching crawfish in the creek behind our house; I smelled the fresh-cut lumber as I helped my dad build our treehouse; I could even feel the crisp fall air when my grandparents came to visit. Memories, both good and bad, can be very powerful influences over our lives.

I believe many of God’s great blessings are wrapped up in memories. The Lord instructed His people throughout Scripture to remember His promises and the great things He had done for them… and to return to Him. On the night Jesus was betrayed, He led them in the last supper to eat the bread and take the cup “ in remembrance of me.”

It can be so easy to forget the most important things in life… and that’s exactly how we lose hope.

This Sunday, we will share the Lord’s Supper together, remembering Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for our sins.

As you prepare yourself for this solemn time of remembrance, consider your own life. Flash back to the time when God saved you. Return to that broken, grateful, humble place… and worship Him.

Please know that I’m praying for you. I love you and look forward to worshipping with you this coming Lord’s Day!

Tensions can cause us to lose hope in this life. Receiving certain news or information can change your whole outlook in an instant. The stock market tanks. A child is hospitalized. A spouse files for divorce. These external tensions touch all of us at one time or another, and, if not dealt with properly, can infect us with ongoing stress.

Poor internal thoughts can really exacerbate hopelessness. Our self-talk may say, “I’m no good”; “I’m not qualified”; “I’m not worthy”; “I can’t do this”; or “They don’t like me”. These lies neutralize our ability to handle stressors before they even arrive. So what can we do about this? Let me suggest a few truths:

1. Negative thoughts are not solutions. Creativity and innovation are often born under pressure. God says He’ll never leave or forsake you and tells us that despite our plans, He’ll direct our steps. In Philippians 4, Paul instructs us to control our thoughts. John 10:10 tells us that Satan is the father of all lies and has only come to steal, kill, and destroy. Jesus has come to give you abundant life. Change your mind!

2. God says you are good enough. In I Peter 2:9, believers in Christ are chosen, royal, and holy. Do you believe that? You should!

3. You are fully equipped to handle whatever comes your way. God Himself will empower you for every challenge you face. Like Paul, you can be content in ALL circumstances, and you can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens you.

God wants His children to possess and maintain hope that we may proclaim His excellencies to the world around us. If you are low on hope, start by seeking Him and accepting His truths for your life. You are a child of the King of Kings! You are who God says you are! Believe in Jesus and live in Hope!

Church of the Island family,

I am kind of a car person. I like old cars and trucks and restored or modified vehicles. I am curious about new technologies and am fascinated by the perks that new cars offer. This is one reason I like renting cars. There’s also just something cool and fun about driving something new or different.

With that said, there are a couple of things that I always think about while I’m in the cockpit of a vehicle that doesn’t belong to me. One is my tendency to “see what this thing can do”. I’m not so sure I would ever buy a car from a rental car company knowing that people like me were once behind the wheel. The other is my fear of an accident. Although I have good insurance, I’m responsible for this expensive machine that belongs to someone else, and for some crazy reason, I’m a little paranoid and more mindful of my surroundings. How in the world can I be so carefree and careful at the same time?!

Sunday, we were reminded in I Peter 1:16 to “be holy, for I am holy”. I Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us that “you are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
As a Christian, I should consider my body like that rental car... a temporary vehicle, entrusted to me by God, insured by the blood of Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit, designed to glorify my Father in Heaven.

As a believer, we must realize that “being holy” is neither too carefree (irresponsible) nor too careful (legalistic). I don’t belong to me... I belong to God. I cannot nurture worldliness and reap Godliness. A holy life is a changed life. The key is realizing whose you are, not who you are. Ask yourself today, “Do I belong to God?” Anything less than that is poor stewardship. You may forget your sins, but your sins will never forget you.
