St. John Lutheran Church - Darien, IL

St. John Lutheran Church - Darien, IL St. John Lutheran Church & Early Learning Center has been serving the community in and around Darien, IL for over 150 years!

We are part of a voluntary association of churches known as the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. Mission: Sharing God's Love Through Connecting People to Christ

God shares His love with us in an unending fountain of grace and mercy. It is that love that draws people to Him. He has called us out of sin and darkness into a new relationship with Him. As forgiven people, we are daily transformed into

disciples of Jesus Christ, sent out to respond to God’s great love for us by sharing it with a broken world. Vision: We seek to accomplish the mission of St. John Lutheran Church by:

Connecting to God Through Word and Sacrament

Throughout history God’s people have been identified by their worship. Here God comes to us through Word and Sacrament to share His love. We gather as a people in need of forgiveness. In this community, people are free to be themselves. We lay all our burdens at the foot of the cross and allow the grace of God to wash them away. As we grow in His Word, we are equipped to extend His love to others so they know that God loves them too. Connecting People Within the Community

Our God is a relational God and He created us to be relational people. We are to work to build healthy relationships within our community because relationships matter. Our relationships with others stem from our relationship with Jesus Christ. Being in relationship with our church family deepens our relationship with Jesus. As brothers and sisters in Christ, we are to care for one another, lift each other up in prayer, and offer support and encouragement at all times. Connecting with Others Through Service & Evangelism

Christ does not gather us into private community, but into public ministry. Equipped and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we seek to use our God-given gifts to do God’s work on earth, reaching the lost and uncommitted and serving those in need with the Gospel of salvation and the love of Jesus. We view local, regional, national, and global outreach as both our privilege and responsibility.

Why does Pastor eat/drink the communion leftovers? Pastor Blanken has written an excellent article detailing this forgotten Lutheran practice. In it, he explains the issue and a lot more. A quote from Luther: “Therefore, see to it that if anything is left over of the Sacrament, either some communicants or the priest himself and his assistant receive it.”

What do the Lutheran Confessions say about consuming the reliquiae, that is, the leftover consecrated bread and wine?
