“He Knows Just What I Need”
Matthew 6:7, 8 - And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.
As we journey through life there are times we may feel empty and all alone and the world is against us. In our desperation, darkness washes over us like a flood consuming our every thought and dream, drowning out the little flicker of hope that we have stored up inside. In times such as these one may believe that this void can never be filled. There were men of God who had such feelings! Consider the apostle Paul and the fear that came upon him as he was ministering in Corinth. It must have been overwhelming, so overwhelming in fact that the Lord spoke to him, encouraging him, saying “Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep silent; for I am with you, and no one will attack you to hurt you; for I have many people in this city.” (Acts 18:9, 10)
The apostle Paul writing to the brethren in Philippi gives these words of encouragement. “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) He says these words as he praises them for their willingness to provide aid to him in his hour of need. Paul understood that it is from Christ Jesus all spiritual blessings flow (Ephesians 1:3). And that God is faithful and will never forsake the elect in their hour of need. Whether it is a physical, emotional, or spiritual need, God is able to fill it. Notice Paul says “according to His riches”. Our God, the creator and sustainer of life can draw from His treasure chest that never runs empty. Once there was a woman of old who lived in Zarephath, she learned this lesson so well. A great famine was on the land and Elijah the prophet of God visited her. He asks her to make for him a cake with the last bit of flower and oil that she had. Hearing the request of the prophet of God and knowing her desperate condition she does as he asks. The scriptures tell us that her bin of flour and jar of oil were not used up until the famine had come to an end. (1 Kings 17:12-16) God will surely see His people through! Charles Spurgeon once said, “Our Lord Jesus is ever giving, and does not for a solitary instant withdraw his hand. As long as there is a vessel of grace not yet full to the brim, the oil shall not be stayed. He is a sun ever-shining; He is manna always falling round the camp; He is a rock in the desert, ever sending out streams of life from His smitten side; the rain of His grace is always dropping; the river of His bounty is ever-flowing, and the well-spring of His love is constantly overflowing.” We speak of the magnitude of God’s love; we remind one another of His marvelous grace. And we sing songs of praise that describe His willingness to see to our every need. Our God is able, willing, and faithful. “He Knows Just What I Need”
