Monday: God’s Commands Reveal His Love
John and Jane Christian arrived at the campground Monday afternoon. After setting up their tent, they decided to walk one of the nearby trails. As they approached the trailhead, they noticed several signs posted by the park service. One warned about steep drop-offs. Another marked areas where campers were not allowed to build fires. A third reminded hikers to stay on the marked trail. Jane stopped and read them carefully. “Some people probably see these signs and think they take away the fun,” she said.

John smiled. “The ranger who posted them knows the dangers better than the people walking the trail.” As they continued hiking, John thought about Sunday’s Bible Storyline lesson. God placed Adam in a perfect garden and gave him one command concerning the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam understood that command as a loving warning from God. He trusted God and obeyed Him. God’s instruction helped Adam remain safe and enjoy fellowship with his Creator. Jane said, “The signs on this trail are there because someone wants to protect us. God’s commands work the same way.”

The rest of the walk gave them plenty to think about. Every warning sign reminded them that wise people listen to those who understand the dangers ahead.
What Scripture Says
Genesis 2:16-17 records God’s command concerning the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. During Sunday’s lesson, we learned that Adam trusted God, and that trust resulted in obedience. Adam appreciated God’s warning because the warning protected him. He viewed God’s law as an expression of God’s love and care. As long as Adam and Eve understood God’s command this way, they obeyed God with gratitude and appreciation.

The same principle remains true today. God’s commands reveal His character. He knows every danger that sin brings into a person’s life. He understands the pain, heartache, and destruction that follow disobedience. Because He loves us, He gives instructions that guide us toward life, fellowship, and blessing.

When God tells us to be honest, forgive others, avoid temptation, worship Him, and follow His Word, He is showing us the path of wisdom. Obedience grows when we trust the One who gave the command. The more we understand God’s goodness, the more we appreciate His instructions.
Tuesday: What We About God Shapes Our Obedience
Tuesday morning, John and Jane sat outside their tent enjoying breakfast. The campground was beginning to come alive. Families were cooking breakfast, hikers were preparing for the day, and children were riding bicycles through the campground roads.

John noticed a map posted near the campground office. A young couple was studying it and discussing which trail to take. After a few minutes they headed in one direction while another family chose a different path. Jane said, “Interesting how a person’s decision is shaped by what they believe. If they think one trail leads to the waterfall, that’s the trail they’ll follow.” John smiled. “That sounds a lot like what we learned Sunday.”

The lesson explained that Satan needed to change what Adam and Eve believed about God before he could change their loyalty to God. As long as they viewed God as loving, wise, and trustworthy, they gladly obeyed Him. Satan’s attack focused on their understanding of God’s motives. “Once Eve accepted Satan’s version of God,” Jane said, “everything else changed.” John said, “Her feelings changed, her thinking changed, and eventually her actions changed.” The rest of the morning gave them plenty to think about. Every choice people make is influenced by what they believe. The same principle applies to a person’s relationship with God.
What Scripture Says
Genesis 3:1 - “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said…”

Genesis 3:4-5 - “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened…”

Genesis 3:6 - “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes… she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat…”

Satan’s first attack was against what Eve believed. He questioned God’s Word, challenged God’s warning, and suggested that God was withholding something good from her. Once Eve accepted that lie, her view of the tree changed and her behavior followed. Sunday’s lesson reminded us that our beliefs shape our behavior. What we believe about God affects how we respond to God. When we believe the truth about God’s character, we trust Him and obey Him. When we accept lies about God, those lies influence our choices and actions.
Wednesday: The Results of Satan’s Victory
Wednesday morning, John and Jane decided to explore another section of the campground. A ranger had recommended a scenic trail that followed a small river through the woods. As they walked, they noticed signs of damage from a storm that had passed through several years earlier. Some large trees had fallen and remained where they landed. Sections of the trail had been rerouted around washed-out areas. New growth had filled many of the open spaces, but evidence of the storm could still be seen.

“It is amazing how one storm can leave its mark for years,” Jane said.

John looked around at the fallen trees and exposed roots. “The campground is still beautiful, but the effects of that storm are everywhere.” As they continued down the trail, Sunday’s lesson came to mind. Genesis 3 records the moment Satan successfully tempted Adam and Eve to rebel against God. That single act of disobedience affected far more than two people in a garden. The consequences spread throughout the world.

“The lesson explained that Satan won a real victory,” Jane said. “Adam and Eve were removed from the garden, sin entered the human race, and death became part of human experience.” John said, “And we still see those effects today.”

Every cemetery, every disease, every broken relationship, and every act of sin reminds us that something is wrong with the world. God’s creation still displays His power and wisdom, but it also bears the marks of the Fall. Sunday’s lesson helped John and Jane understand that the problems people experience today can be traced back to Genesis 3 and humanity’s rebellion against God.
What Scripture Says
Genesis 3:17 - “Cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;”

Romans 5:12 - “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”

Romans 8:22 - “For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”

These verses show the widespread effects of Adam’s sin. The curse affected mankind, the earth, and every generation that followed. Sunday’s lesson taught that Satan won a real victory in Genesis 3. Sin and death entered God’s creation, and humanity became separated from God. Yet Satan’s victory was only partial. God was already preparing His plan to defeat Satan, rescue mankind, and restore His kingdom. The rest of the Bible tells the story of that coming victory.
Thursday: God Promised Victory
Thursday evening, John and Jane sat beside the campfire watching the flames dance against the dark sky. Their camping trip was coming to an end, and they spent some time talking about the places they had visited throughout the week. They had seen evidence of old storms, damaged trails, and fallen trees. Yet they had also seen new growth, repaired paths, and signs that the campground was thriving once again. Jane looked toward a section of the campground where workers had recently repaired a footbridge.

“I like seeing things restored,” she said. “When something is broken, it is encouraging to know someone is working to make it right again.” John said, “That reminds me of the second half of Sunday’s lesson. After Adam and Eve sinned, God immediately revealed His plan to bring victory and restoration.” The lesson had explained that Satan won a partial victory in Genesis 3, but he did not win the war. Before Adam and Eve left the garden, God announced that a coming Deliverer would defeat Satan. From that moment forward, the Bible follows God’s plan to fulfill that promise. “The rest of the Bible makes much more sense when you see that connection,” Jane said. “God was already preparing the solution before human history had gone very far.” John smiled. “And every major event in Scripture moves that promise forward until Jesus arrives.” As they watched the fire burn lower, they thanked God that Genesis 3 does not end with defeat. It points forward to hope, redemption, and the certainty of God’s victory
What Scripture Says
Genesis 3:15 - “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

Galatians 4:4-5 - “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman… To redeem them that were under the law.”

1 John 3:8 - “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

Genesis 3:15 contains God’s first promise of a coming Deliverer. Satan would wound the promised Seed, but the promised Seed would ultimately crush Satan’s power. Galatians 4 shows that Jesus is the fulfillment of that promise. First, John explains that Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. Sunday’s lesson reminded us that God’s plan for victory began in Genesis 3 and unfolds throughout the rest of Scripture. Every step moves toward the day when God’s kingdom is fully restored and Satan is completely defeated.
Friday: Choosing Your Kingdom
Friday morning, John and Jane finished packing their campsite and prepared for the drive home. Before leaving, they took one last walk around the campground. During the week they had met families from different states, talked with hikers on the trails, and listened to stories around campfires. Some people enjoyed following the campground rules and helping others. Others ignored posted signs, left trash behind, and created problems for those around them.

As they walked back toward their vehicle, Jane said, “You can usually tell who is cooperating with the campground and who is creating problems for it.” John nodded. “That reminds me of Sunday’s lesson. Satan wanted Adam and Eve to stop following God and start following him.” The lesson explained that Satan’s goal was much bigger than eating a piece of fruit. He wanted Adam and Eve’s allegiance. He wanted them to reject God’s authority and choose their own path. The same battle continues today. Every person must decide whose voice they will trust and whose authority they will follow.

As they drove away from the campground, John thought about how many people live as though God’s commands do not matter. Some ignore God’s Word. Others decide for themselves what is right and wrong. Many want God’s blessings while refusing God’s authority. Sunday’s lesson showed that this is the same rebellion that began in Genesis 3.
What Scripture Says
Joshua 24:15 - “Choose you this day whom ye will serve…”

John 8:44 - “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.”

Colossians 1:13 - “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:”

These verses remind us that every person belongs to a kingdom and follows a king. Satan’s goal is still to gain allegiance by convincing people to reject God’s authority and follow their own desires. Those who remain in Satan’s kingdom continue down a path that leads to judgment and separation from God. Through faith in Jesus Christ, people can be delivered from the kingdom of darkness and become citizens of God’s kingdom. Sunday’s lesson challenged us to consider whose authority we are following and whose kingdom we are helping advance through our daily choices. Learn More Here:

The Bible Storyline: Lesson 8 - Genesis 3 - God’s Earthly Kingdom Invaded

Introduction
Imagine turning on a movie and the opening scene shows a beautiful city at peace. The markets are full, families are happy, children are playing and everything seems safe and secure.
Although you are enjoying the peaceful scene, your mind can’t help think: “Something bad is about to happen.” Why do you think that way? Because movies almost always start with everything being like it is supposed to be then comes the evil twist. At some point an enemy will invade the city and everything will change.
Then it happens. The music changes. The scene darkens. Chaos breaks out. The peaceful city suddenly becomes a place of fear, confusion and destruction.

That is Genesis 3
Genesis 3 is the chapter where the Bible storyline takes its first major turn.

• It is the chapter where Satan invades God’s earthly kingdom.
• It is the chapter where sin enters the world, the curse falls upon creation, and death begins its reign of terror.

Romans 5:14

“Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses,….”

Romans 5:17

“For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; ….”

Romans 5:21

“That as sin hath reigned unto death,….”

But Genesis 3 is also the chapter where God introduces His plan to redeem and restore His earthly Kingdom. His plan begins with a PROMISE.
Before we examine that promise, let’s review what we have learned about the Earth.

Earth
God created earth by speaking it into existence. He said let ‘there be land and there was land.’
God created the earth to be His kingdom.
• Through mankind, God would fill the earth with His image and likeness.
• Through mankind, God would rule over earth and have dominion.
• Through mankind, God would be glorified and worshiped in His Kingdom.
God created earth as a permanent place, where He would dwell with mankind and the rest of His creation.

Earth Invaded
Satan cannot create his own earth, so he invades God’s.
His goal is to establish his kingdom here.
This invasion and Satan’s partial victory means:

• You are born into a war between two kingdoms
• You are born into Satan’s kingdom
• You will die in this war
• It is up to you to decide which Kingdom you will serve.
Prior to Genesis 3, this was not true!
If there had been no Genesis 3:

• You would not be born into a war between the two kingdoms
• You would not be born into the kingdom of Satan
• You would live forever in God’s kingdom on earth.
Genesis 3 is the chapter when Satan launches his first attack on God’s earthly kingdom. His attack ended with results that shape the rest of the Bible Storyline.

Result # 1 - Satan Won A Victory
Satan walked away from this attack with a partial victory. Sermon #7 explained what each kingdom is fighting for in this war. We called these “Objectives”:
Let’s review those objectives:

• Dominion - sovereign rule over the land and people
• Worship - the primary objective of both kingdoms
• People - citizens who obey and serve the King
In Genesis chapters 1-2

• God creates earth, animals, and mankind
• God rules over creation through Adam, who serves as a representative of God’s authority.
• God dwelt with mankind on earth and enjoyed fellowship.
• God commissions mankind to fill the earth with His image and likeness.
• If this command is followed, the earth would be God’s Kingdom and filled with His glory.
• God looks over His creation and declares it “Very Good” - Gen 1:31

Genesis 1:31

And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

But in Genesis 3, Satan invades the earth and interrupts God’s kingdom plan.

Genesis 3:1–10

1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. 8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. 9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

The War Objectives!
To establish his own kingdom on earth, Satan must take what belongs to God. To accomplish this, he must convince Adam and Eve to follow Him and not God.
He first approached Eve and planted the seed of doubt about God’s motive regarding the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
The Command & Motive

Genesis 2:16–17

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Adam trusts God; and this trust results in obedience:

• Adam appreciates God’s warning about the tree. – because of the warning he is safe.
• He views God’s law as love and protection. – Adam’s view produces a grateful heart.
• Adam learned of the tree before Eve was created: but he shared that information with Eve to protect her from eating the fruit and dying.
As long as Adam & Eve interpreted God’s law as protective and loving, they obeyed God’s law with joy and appreciation, not resentment.

Our Beliefs Shape our Behavior.
Satan needed to change what Adam and Eve believed about God before he could get them to change their loyalty to God.

His lie about God caused doubt that quickly grew into:

Mistrust

Disobedience to God.

Eve no longer believed God was protecting them with His law.
She believed God was holding them back from something good.
The distrust Eve felt toward God replaced former emotions when she looked at the tree and thought about God.

• Love & Gratitude for God are replaced with resentment toward God
• Desire to obey and appreciate God are replaced with disobedience toward God
Finally, they defected from God’s kingdom and followed Satan’s voice to eat of the tree.

Satan’s Partial Victory
Satan became the prince and power of the air, and he would wield influence over all of Adam’s descendants:

Ephesians 2:1–3

1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

2 Corinthians 4:4

4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

• At this point, every descendant of Adam would no longer be born into God’s Kingdom.
• They would no longer be the perfect image and likeness of God.
• From that moment forward every descendant of Adam is born into the kingdom of Satan.
• They fill the earth with the image and likeness of Satan.

1 John 3:8

8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

John 8:44

44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Pause: Let the reality of what Satan accomplished sink in.

• In this moment there is only LOSS
• In this moment there is no John 3:16, and no foundation for a John 3:16.
• Without Genesis 3:15, there is no John 3:16. (more on this later)
If Nothing Changes
If nothing changes,

• Every descendant of Adam is born into the Kingdom of Satan.
• The earth is filled with Satan’s image bearers who refuse to serve or worship God.
If nothing changes

• God and all humanity are enemies.
• Man lives under God’s curse, and spends eternity in God’s wrath.
That is the partial, and short -lived victory Satan won in the Garden.

Result #2 - God Plans Ultimate Victory
But God responded with a counter attack and lays out a plan for ultimate victory.
God’s Options

• He could let Satan have earth and mankind
• He could destroy earth and let Satan suffer the loss of His temporary kingdom
• He could destroy earth and Satan
• He could redeem, recover, and restore all things to Himself.
God chose option #4 - Redeem, Recover, and Restore all things to Himself
As hopeless as the situation was God exceeded all expectations.

He Made A Promise: Gen 3:15

Genesis 3:15

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Gen 3:15 is God’s announcement that the war is NOT over and that God will have the final and ultimate victory.

Contrasting Kingdoms
Adam’s descendants enter Satan’s kingdom through our first birth – We enter God’s Kingdom through our second birth

John 3:3

3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Satan used deception to lure Eve into his Kingdom – God uses truth to draw us into His.

John 8:31–32

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Satan must blind the eyes of his citizens to keep them in his kingdom – God opens the eyes of the spiritually blind to draw us into His.

Acts 26:18

18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

God’s Plan
• God plans to redeem both mankind and the earth from Satan’s influence
• God plans to destroy Satan and render him powerless
• God plans to establish His Kingdom on earth, and fill the earth with His glory
• God will accomplish this plan through a Savior who will take back all that Satan stole.
• God will reveal the fullness of His plan over time.
• God is actively taking people out of Satan’s kingdom and incorporating them into His.
God’s Promise
Did you know that Gen 3:15 and Jn 3:16 are inseparable?

John 3:16

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Genesis 3:15

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

• Genesis 3:15 is the foundation from which John 3:16 is grounded.
• Had God not made the promise in Gen 3:15, there would be no announcement for John 3:16
The storyline of the Bible does not end in Gen 3 when Satan won a victory. The rest of the Bible is the unfolding story of the two kingdoms at war with one another.
Every story from this point forward presents God marching toward victory and overcoming every counterattack by Satan and His kingdom.

The Choice is Yours
You must make a choice between serving Satan and his kingdom, or God and His Kingdom.
The choice is not where do you want to live when you die, but which kingdom will you serve until you die. That alone will determine your eternal destination.

Joshua 24:15

15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

These words by Joshua to the children of Israel are just as relevant for us today. If the Israelites wanted to live in the promised land of Canaan. If they wanted to enjoy the protection, provision, and peace of living in Canaan with God, then they must choose to serve and obey God.

Romans 6:6

6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Romans 6:16

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

God accepts no excuses for sin and no exceptions for disobedience to His law.
Consider the words of Elijah the prophet. When Israel was trying to mix the worship of God with the worship of a pagan deity known as Baal. Elijah warned them:

1 Kings 18:21

21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

Final Thought – Your choice is not finalized until it is backed up by your actions.

God’s Handbook for His Image Bearers:
Lesson 8 • Rewards of Pursuing Wisdom

Review

We are currently involved in a study of the book of Proverbs. To help us understand the book, we assigned a subtitle to the series:

Proverbs: God’s Handbook for His Image Bearers
God created us to represent Him on earth and rule over creation under His authority.
This means our thoughts, actions, choices, words, and life must reflect God.
The Book of Proverbs equips us to do this.

Life’s Choices

Solomon breaks life down into ONE main choice, followed by a series of supporting choices.

The One Main Choice

• Life vs Death
• Heaven vs Hell

Managing Our Choice

In the first two chapters, Solomon presented two paths his son must choose between. Each path leads to separate destinations:

• Eternal life in the presence, protection, and provision of God
• Eternal damnation, separated from God and suffering God’s wrath
Ultimately, our destination is the result of the path we choose. To end up at the destination of Life With God requires choosing to take, and remain on, the path of righteousness — (Image God)

The Vital Step — Pursue Wisdom

Chapter 2:1–4 taught us what it looks like to pursue wisdom:

Proverbs 2:1–4 (KJV) — My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

Take notice of the word “If” in these verses. This is a conditional word. The counterpart to that word is found in verses 5–11. Look for the word “Then” — if you do this, then you receive this.
Chapter 2:5–11 will teach us the reward of pursuing wisdom.

Proverbs 2:5–11 (KJV)
5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.
9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.
10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:

In these verses, Solomon presents three results of pursuing wisdom. If you do the work of pursuing wisdom, then you receive these results:

God & His Knowledge
Verses 5–6

God & His Protection
Verses 7–8

God & His Image
Verses 9–11

God & His Knowledge — Verses 5–6

Proverbs 2:5–6 (KJV) — Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Solomon spent four verses describing an intense pursuit of Wisdom. Now he describes the outcome of that pursuit as receiving God and His wisdom.

The Master’s Degree Illustration
When someone receives a master’s degree in a subject, it means they have mastered the subject. It does not mean they know everything there is to know about the subject. But earning a master’s degree means you have a working knowledge of the subject and can apply that information properly.
Example: the average person knows that chemicals exist. But a person who earns a master’s in chemistry knows how to use those chemicals in beneficial ways.
Solomon provided you the path to earning a master’s degree in the knowledge of God. You will not know all there is to know about God, but you will know God far beyond a surface level belief that He exists.

Jeremiah 29:13 (KJV) — And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Proverbs 9:10 (KJV) — The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

John 17:3 (KJV) — And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

Solomon claims you will have an intimate working knowledge of God.
All the pagan nations knew and believed that the God of Israel was real. But they did not know the God of Israel in a relational way.

Discussion / Application

1. Have you earned your master’s degree in the knowledge and understanding of God?

What is the book of Proverbs equipping us to become? Image Bearers of God.
We cannot image God if we are not intimately familiar with Him.

Proverbs 2:6 — The Source

Proverbs 2:6 (KJV) — For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

We become intimately familiar with God by seeking and searching for Him in His word — the Bible. It is the LORD who gives us wisdom. We learn from Him.

The Disciples

You and I

They spent life with Jesus and He taught them. They earned their master’s degree in God by spending life with Jesus. When He returned to Heaven they had a working knowledge of God and were able to make disciples of Jesus — they learned to image Jesus and teach others to image Him.

We must spend life with God’s word. Not merely reading a verse a day but living with a verse a day — letting the Bible shape our thoughts, desires, actions, and reactions.

Application
We learn through the Bible that God loves all people, He is honest, righteous, loving, kind, forgiving, patient, longsuffering, and just in all things. He punishes sin, and seeks to reconcile broken relationships. He restores and redeems.
Before learning about God’s character, we may feel justified in sin, vengeance, immorality, pride, selfishness, etc…
But after learning about God, we have a choice to go down the path that images God and leads to life eternal, or to go down the path that fails to image God and leads to damnation.
The first result / reward for pursuing wisdom is God and His knowledge. When we master that knowledge and follow the path of righteousness, it leads to the next result: God and His Protection.

God & His Protection — Verses 7–8

Proverbs 2:7–8 (KJV) — He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.

He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous — God does not dispense wisdom as a one-time deposit in our life. God stores up what we need for every moment in life. He is a constant guide for everyday decisions.

You chose a path that will lead you to eternal life in the Kingdom of God. Wisdom keeps you on that path. You must choose both a destination and the path that leads you there.

Matthew 7:13–14 (KJV) — Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

In Luke 13:24, Jesus warned us to strive to enter at the strait gate.
That word means to make every effort, to agonize, struggle, contend, work hard, exert to the fullest, and labor fervently.
Jesus is not teaching us to try to earn God’s forgiveness. The Bible is clear that forgiveness is a gift from God. But repentance is one requirement God gives to receiving God’s grace. Jesus preached that all men must repent — to change the mind, resulting in a change of action or behavior.
Compare Jesus’ word “strive” with Solomon’s teaching to work hard to pursue wisdom. Jesus is saying we must make a choice and work hard to manage that choice. Be intentional to stay on the path of righteousness.

God stores up wisdom for us to stay on the path of righteousness. Consider Adam — God provided wisdom for Adam to stay on the path of righteousness. But Adam chose to leave that path and his choice resulted in death.

The Buckler

The buckler was the small shield the soldier carried close to his body. The shield would absorb the impact of a sword or weapon used against the one carrying it. Solomon states that God becomes like this defensive shield to those who pursue wisdom. He defends us from all attacks of our enemy.

David’s Example

Joseph’s Example

David mastered God’s word, kept it near him, and when temptation came he pulled out God’s word to protect him from leaving the path of righteousness.
Psalm 119:11 (KJV) — Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Joseph was a servant in Potiphar’s house. Potiphar’s wife daily solicited Joseph to sleep with her. But Joseph told her he could not sin against God that way. He chose the path of righteousness because he mastered the knowledge of God.
The result was Joseph went to prison under a false charge. Yet in Gen 39:21, the LORD was with Joseph in the prison, protected him, promoted him, and used this path to provide for Joseph’s family in the future famine.

The pursuit of wisdom results in God and His knowledge; God and His protection. Next we look at God and His image.

God & His Image — Verses 9–11

Proverbs 2:9–11 (KJV) — Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:

Solomon shows that pursuing wisdom leads to mastering the knowledge of God, which leads to remaining on the path of righteousness and being protected by God on that path. Those two results transform us into the image of God.

Righteousness

Treating people rightly

Judgment

Judging fairly

Equity

Living honestly in every situation

Every Good Path

The practice of all virtues — a moral compass that works in every area of life

We first came across these words in Proverbs 1:3 when Solomon stated why he wrote Proverbs. They reappear here as the result of pursuing wisdom — the person who pursues wisdom gains a moral compass that works in every area of life. This means we are equipped to image God.

Proverbs 1:3 (KJV) — To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

Verse 10 — Wisdom Enters the Heart

The heart is not the place of emotion — it is the sum of who we are and the place we make decisions from our moral compass. When wisdom enters the heart, verse 10 says it is pleasant unto the soul.

Eve’s View

Joseph’s View

Satan convinced Eve that God’s law was a problem — unfair and restrictive. She chose to leave the path of righteousness to follow the influence of Satan. Many people who identify as Christians talk about God’s law as if it is unfair or hard to live by.

Joseph did not resent God because he was not allowed to sleep with Potiphar’s wife. He did not think God is keeping me from something good — rather he knew God is protecting me from something harmful.

Solomon has a different view. He says the person who pursues wisdom and masters the knowledge of God finds God’s laws precious and joyful.

Psalm 19:7–11 (KJV) — The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

1 John 5:3 (KJV) — For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

When Adam and Eve knew God loved them, they saw His law as a joy to keep. But when Satan convinced them God was not acting out of love, they saw His command as grievous.

Discussion / Application

2. How do you talk about God’s commands? Are they hard to keep?
3. Do you feel God is withholding something good from you?
4. Or do you find joy in saying no to sin because you sincerely appreciate God protecting you from sin and wrath?

Conclusion

When we master the knowledge of God, we know He is protecting us from sin and we never justify sin.
We not only choose eternal life as our destiny — we choose the path of righteousness as our daily course.
We manage that decision by staying on the path of righteousness because we know God’s mind and character, so we choose to image Him in every action and reaction to life.
