Celebrate the Risen Christ - Matthew 28:1-15
Jesus died for our sins on Nisan 14, the Passover feast. Passover speaks of redemption. Messiah, the Passover Lamb, was sacrificed for us.
Jesus’ body was in the grave on Nisan 15. The feast of Unleavened Bread was celebrated from Nisan 15-21. Unleavened Bread speaks of sanctification. Messiah’s body would not decay in the grave.
Jesus rose from the dead on Nisan 16, the feast of Firstfruits. Firstfruits speak of resurrection. Messiah rose triumphantly from the grave on the third day, the “firstfruits” of all who would rise because He rose!
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a Man has come the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. - 1 Cor. 15:20-22
Matthew 28:1-15
Persistent female disciples were there - V. 1
Powerful angel(s) were there - V. 2-3
Petrified guards were there - V. 4
Each gospel has its own emphasis as it relates the news of Jesus’ resurrection – Matthew goes more into the fear people were facing and what became of it after the empty tomb was discovered.
The petrified guards dealt with their fear by compromising their integrity - V. 11-15
So even as the truth of Jesus’ resurrection was spreading among those who believe, Satan and his operatives began circulating an alternative explanation to reinforce unbelief. The wrong kind of fear by the guards had led to compromising their integrity with lies.
Encountering the Risen Christ changed fear to joy for the disciples - V. 5-10
He had told them 4 times of both His death and Resurrection. They had spent so much time avoiding the necessity of His death they had missed the glorious promise of His resurrection (16:21; 17:22-23; 20:18-19; 26:32).
What happens after a person “comes and sees” and believes in Jesus? They “go and tell” the truth to others about Jesus!
Now the other gospels tell us about many other encounters that happened between Jesus and the disciples that day and over the next week, including how Jesus reassured them in Jerusalem before meeting them in Galilee for the Great Commission. I like how Matthew senses the point he needed to make has been made and goes right on into the Great Commission of our Lord and Savior.
This Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised Him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it. - Acts 2:23-24
Jesus’ resurrection proved the truth of who He was, what He said and that God the Father had accepted His sacrifice for our sins!
Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. - Romans 4:25
Jesus’ death took care of our sin problem so we would not have to go to Hell; His resurrection took care of our death problem so we would get to go with Him to Heaven and experience a future bodily resurrection to live with Him on the New Earth!
For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His. - Rom. 6:5
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. - Romans 10:9-10
