This past weekend we had Dick Harris’s Celebration of Life. If you come in person to Men’s Fraternity, Dick is known for being a greeter and wearing shorts even when it was 35 degrees outside. He was a Table Group Leader and all around great guy.
Dick had 10 lessons to live by that he passed on to his sons. Here they are:
1. Believing God exists isn’t enough. Even Satan knows that.
(Even Satan believes in God. Do more than that)
2. Read the Book of Proverbs once a year.
- The central theme of the Book of Proverbs is that the "fear of the Lord" (a deep reverence for God and submission to His will) is the foundation of all true wisdom, knowledge, and sound judgment. It is a practical guide that contrasts the path of the wise with that of the fool.
3. Come to grips with Easter. It will affect everything else you do
- Jesus defeated death so that we all could be forgiven of our sins. Love is stronger than darkness. Jesus died for us, and can give us a new beginning. Second chances at a new life are real with God.
4. Strength without moral significance is a false strength.
- Have moral direction with every action.
5. There are many males in the world; few of them are men. Be one of the few.
6. Honor the women in your life.
- All of them.
7. Run with your head up.
- Have a goal, have a plan, SEE what you hit.
8. Embrace leadership responsibility; do not shrink from it (learn the skills to pay the bills).
- Be a leader.
9. Listen actively, communicate directly
- No fluff - (Listen first, speak second)
10. A goal without a plan is just a wish (failing to plan is planning to fail (hope is not a plan)
- Plan your life and live it.
11. Chop wood every day.
- Do something everyday that takes effort: mental, physical, emotional, whatever it is. And make this a habit.
