We had beautiful weather this morning for the 2025 Kiwanis-Danville 4th of July Parade, held under the theme 'Celebrating 50 years of Community Service.' Over twenty members walked and waved and distributed candy. May God bless our neighbors and our native land.

Please join us in prayer:
Eternal King and Lord of lords, Who has called us through the Gospel to be Your people and heirs of Your promises, lead us and our neighbors, we pray, to a knowledge of Your saving, gracious will, that we may know the things that make for the peace of our country and promote its true welfare, and thus be enabled to serve it with true love, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Yesterday was the Feast Day for St. Peter and St. Paul, Apostles of the Lord.

“By all Your Saints in warfare,
For all Your saints at rest,
Your holy name, O Jesus,
Forevermore be blest!
For You have won the battle
That they might wear the crown:
And now they shine in glory
Reflected from Your throne.

We praise You for Saint Peter;
We praise You for Saint Paul;
They taught both Jew and Gentile
That Christ is all in all.
To cross and sword they yielded
And saw Your kingdom come;
O God, these two apostles
Reached life through martyrdom.

Then let us praise the Father
And worship God the Son
And sing to God the Spirit,
Eternal Three in One,
Till all the ransomed number
Fall down before the throne,
Ascribing power and glory
And praise to God alone.”

Today is the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist.

A reading from Luke 1:57-80:
“Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, but his mother answered, ‘No; he shall be called John.’ And they said to her, ‘None of your relatives is called by this name.’ And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, ‘His name is John.’ And they all wondered. And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea, and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, ‘What then will this child be?’ For the hand of the Lord was with him. And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, ‘Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us; to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.’ And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.”

The English District convention has been taking place this week in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In light of the work being done by the churches of the English District, let us pray for the church, that it might continue to do Christ’s work in the world:
“Merciful God, we humbly implore You to cast the bright beams of Your light upon Your Church, that we, being instructed by the doctrine of the blessed apostles, may walk in the light of Your truth and finally attain to the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.”

Let us also pray for Pastor Ledic, our congregational delegate Joel Ross, and all others as they travel home from the convention:
“Lord God our Father, You kept Abraham and Sarah in safety throughout the days of their pilgrimage, You led the children of Israel through the midst of the sea, and by a star You led the Wise Men to the infant Jesus. Protect and guide all those now in their time of travel. Make their ways safe and their homecomings joyful, and bring us all at last to our heavenly home, where You dwell in glory with Your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.”

Today is the Feast of the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth.

The event is recorded in Luke 1:39-45:
“In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.’”

Let us pray:
Almighty God, You chose the Virgin Mary to be the mother of your Son and made known through her Your gracious regard for the poor and lowly and despised. Grant that we may receive Your Word in humility and faith, and so to be made one with your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Today is the Feast of the Ascension.

A reading from Acts 1: 6-11
“So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.’ And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’”

Please join us tonight at 7:30 pm for a Divine Service celebrating the Feast of the Ascension.

On this day 175 years ago, the LCMS was founded in Chicago, Illinois. On April 26, 1847 twelve pastors who represented fourteen congregations formed the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States. That name would eventually be changed to the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.

Let us say a prayer for the church, both our synodical church body and our own church.
“Almighty God, grant to Your Church Your Holy Spirit and the wisdom that comes down from above, that Your Word may not be bound but have free course and be preached to the joy and edifying of Christ’s holy people, that in steadfast faith we may serve You and, in the confession of Your name, abide unto the end; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.”
