As some already are aware, this Sunday will be our pastor Kevin Williams' last service at the South Killingly Congregational Church. We will be "going out with a bang" celebrating the baptism of Matthew LaPointe and sharing in a service dedicated to community needs, support and hope.

Starting Sunday, October 7th, Bonni Piccione will join us as our interim pastor while we discern what's next for "the little white church on the hill". In the meantime, we will spend this week celebrating lives lived together in community, and seeking to be a river of life that rages with a voice of justice, that flows with a current of encouragement that lifts others up, and that carries all we encounter to calm pools of healing and grace.

All are welcome to join us this Sunday at 10:30 AM, where words of encouragement are shared leaving no one out and leaving no one behind.

We’re taught to our on the armor of God in order to strengthen ourselves for our spiritual journey. But the order it’s presented in matters. Note that we are to don things like the belt of truth and the breastplate of justice before we are already to wield the sword of the Spirit. Drop in this Sunday at 10:30 am and we’ll walk through why it’s important that we understand who we’re defending ourselves from and why proper preparation is so critical!

As I think most are aware there was a devastating fire at Plainfield Memorial School this week and the expectation is that school will not be able to resume there until January. They are in the midst of finding space for school to continue at this stage.

Many of our local siblings in Christ collect school supplies and distribute them to schools in our area to help offset needs that their budgets currently don’t support. Given the devastation in Plainfield, Pastor Lisa at St. John Lutheran talked with the Superintendent's Office in Plainfield as well as the Chair of the School Committee and asked if there were other ways we can help. Their request at this time is gift cards for teachers to use to re-purchase school supplies they need for their students/classroom. They have been in the building and have seen that most teachers had already set up their classrooms and most of those supplies come from teachers purchasing them on their own. (As a parent of a 4th grade teacher, I can tell you without doubt how this can add up very quickly).

So, the request is for gift cards. While we are faith community in Killingly, I also know that many of us have families affected by this fire and Plainfield is our neighbor. If any folks of our faith community are able to donate some gift cards that is what will be most helpful to Plainfield Memorial School. WalMart, Target or Staples cards are some early recommendations. Amazon or Teachers Pay Teachers would also provide great benefit. Cards can be delivered directly to the Superintendent's Office in Plainfield; or they can be placed in an envelope labeled “SKCC” and dropped off to St. John Lutheran, and they will deliver them next week when they are done with collecting all the supplies and gift cards they are purchasing. Any gift cards purchased would need to be provided by Wednesday 8/22.

Please consider prayerfully giving what you can to help these students receive the best possible experience to the start of their school year given all the other areas of disruption they are faced with.
