Lord of Armies
1 Chronicles 11:9 - David steadily grew more powerful, and the Lord of Armies was with him.
In 1 Chronicles chapter 11 we learn about David becoming the King of Israel and capturing the city of Jerusalem. The people loved David because even when Saul was King, David was leading them in battle. The inhabitants of Jerusalem at that time were the Jebusites and they said to David, “You will never get in here.” But he did! David said whoever is first to kill a Jebusite will become the chief commander, so Joab being the warrior that he was, took that challenge. He was the first to charge and kill a Jebusite and David captured the stronghold of Zion, the City of David. David continued to grow more and more powerful, becoming the greatest king that ever ruled Israel. How was David able to do this? Because the Lord of Armies (or Lord of Hosts as it says in the KIng James Version) was with him. We all face battles in life, not physical, hand to hand combat as we read about here, but spiritual battles. During those spiritual battles, Satan will often try to discourage us as he did David here when he says, “you will never get in there”. He will say to us, “you will never be able to do that”, “you’re not good enough”, you’re not strong enough”, you’ve got too much baggage”, etc. Whatever he can say to discourage you, he will. He would like nothing better than to cripple you, so that you don’t move forward, so you don’t share your testimony, so you don’t live the abundant life that Jesus promised us. Yes, that is how Satan works. If he can cripple you, he can keep you from having victory and tearing down the strong holds that stand in your way. And just like David, you cannot do this on your own. David had Joab, the mighty warrior to help him. We need Joabs in our lives. Those people that will meet the challenge to help us in our battles. That will pray for us and uphold us. And even greater than that we need the Lord of Armies. Throughout David’s life he steadily grew more powerful, the Lord of Armies was with him. When he fought the lion and the bear, steadily he grew more powerful. As he fought Goliath, steadily he grew more powerful. As he was on the run from Saul, steadily he grew more powerful. All these battles of David's life drew him closer and closer to the Lord of Armies. They increased his faith. Each time he faced a battle, the Lord of Armies was with him. And so it is with us if we trust the Lord. If we face our battles in the name of the Lord. We too will steadily grow in our faith and we will steadily grow more powerful because we know and trust that the Lord of Armies is with us.
