I was about 11 years old when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was gun down in Memphis on April 4, 1968, just two hours east of where I was born and grew up in Southeast Arkansas. As I observed the painful impact of his murder on my grandparents, parents and Black America at large, I realized how important and influential Dr. King had been upon our nation and even the world as he would win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his non-violent resistance and Civil Rights campaigns in America. I have spent the better part of my adult years growing in my appreciation of all he accomplished in his brief lifetime. As a Baptist minister like he was, I have committed my life to doing what I can to promote equal rights and racial healing through the ministries where I have served in Arkansas, Alabama, Texas, New York and Florida.
It is an honor to host a Forum on Racial Justice in memory of Dr. King's legacy but also out of necessity for today's racial hostilities in our nation. There are political forces today that are seeking to roll back many of the hard fought for gains that African Americans have given their lives to make our country a better place to live for all people. On This Saturday Morning, January 27, 2024 I welcome you and others of goodwill and Christian brotherhood to Join me and a dozen other followers of Jesus Christ as we seek to Biblically and thoughtfully answer several of the probing questions which Dr. King raised for us in his provocation "Letter from the Birmingham Jail."
An outstanding Morehouse graduate and leader in Southern Baptist work in New Orleans along with concerned Southern Baptist Professors, Dr. David Allen and Dr. Barry Cramer will join me as we grapple with some of Dr. King's key points in his letter as we apply his message to our Savior's Charge to engage the work of justice and mercy in the communities we serve in DFW.
Our MLK Forum on Racial Justice will begin with breakfast at 9:15a on this Saturday morning, January 27. We will meet at First Church of the Nazarene, 1301 West Green Oaks Blvd, Arlington, Texas 76013. Thanks you for your prayers and coming with a commitment to collaborate, listen, interact and leave ready to live as a better witness for our Savior. Every blessing friends.
