Shana Tova! Happy biblical New Year!
Today marks the beginning of the biblical new year. Instead of celebrating the new year in the dead of winter, the biblical calendar reflects a much more natural rhythm of time. As daylight hours begin to increase and the sun’s warmth and glow begin to call forth new life, YHVH invites us into a season where the promised land itself is coming alive.
We see this in the book of Exodus. As YHVH prepared to fully liberate His people, He reveals to them this beautiful instruction:
“This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you.” - Exodus 12:2
And in the very next chapter:
“Today, in the month of Aviv, you are going out.” - Exodus 13:4
As we welcome this first day of Aviv, let us remember how YHVH brought us out from under the bo***ge of sin and the powers of this world, setting us apart as His covenant people. Just as creation is being brought forth into new life, through our Messiah, so were we!
