#2: The Why

Psalm 150 also reveals The Why of praise and of worship. Psalm 150:2 “Praise him for his mighty works; praise his unequalled greatness!” [NLT]. Why do you praise Him? You praise Him for His mighty works, “He moves mountains. He causes walls to fall, with His mighty power, He performs miracles. There is nothing that is impossible with Him. And we are standing only because He made a way!” (Lyrics from Travis Greene’s Made A Way). Why do you praise? You praise Him for His mighty works and for His unequalled greatness.

The truth is, whatever you are facing right now has an expiration date. But God’s presence, His acts, and His attributes remain forever constant. What you are going through may be trying to belittle who God is to you. Guess what? Praise makes you see how big your God is. And honestly when you catch a glimpse of how big your God is, the problem just shrinks into its place of insignificance.

Hebrews 13:15 says, “Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name”[NLT]. The truth about sacrifice is that it hurts, and it is costly. A sacrifice takes effort. When God says, ‘offer a sacrifice of praise,’ it means that sometimes you will not feel like praising God. However, because you know the why of praise, you are able to praise God regardless of how you feel and then it becomes a sacrifice of praise. Sometimes, we have so much going on plus an endless prayer list and it makes praise tough. Guess what? You really cannot separate sacrifice and praise. Perhaps, just perhaps, heaven is saying, it is time to switch to praise. Spend the same amount of time you have spent praying, in praising God and watch what will happen.

VALENTINE'S DAY DEVOTIONAL
By Adri Pineda

Reflecting God’s Love

We learn through God’s Word what love is. What about what love isn’t? Love is not jealous, proud, or rude. It does not keep a record of wrongs, yet how many of us do this, though? We post on social media how much we love our spouse, but as soon as we see the trash can full or the toilet seat up, we are quick to angrily remind them how they “never” do it right. Sometimes, the object of our wrath is not a spouse, but a parent. We remind them, over and over again, of the mistakes they made through our childhood. These are not actions of love.

Love conquers all. It is supportive, trusting, and never fails. In order to overcome battles and be healed from hurts, we need to know the true meaning of love. We need to acknowledge when we are not acting in love. Many of us love our spouse so very much that we believe jealousy is a form of loving them to protect the relationship. Jealousy is an ugly trait that speaks more about your insecurities. Controlling a relationship for fear of losing someone is absolutely not love. It says in the book of 1st John that love casts out all fears. I encourage you to love in a way that is free. If God, who loves you and is powerful enough to do so, does not control you, why are you trying to control someone you love?

Some of us were not shown true love growing up. We witnessed jealousy in marriages or high-tempered relationships. Maybe your past did not allow you to have a clear example of love, but this does not mean you should continue the cycle. Christ’s love is your greatest example. Begin to act in love by knowing the God of love. When you choose Christ as your Savior, you are renewed and transformed into the image of God. We can forgive others because God has forgiven us. We can love because He first loved us.

If you are struggling to love others or find yourself jealous, constantly bothered and quick to anger, I encourage you to do two things. First, begin to read the Bible to know the God of love more. Second, surround yourself with people who uplift love through a church or a Bible study. You were made to reflect God’s love here on earth.

Ultimate Victory

Life turns every person upside down. No one escapes unscathed. Not the woman who discovers her husband is having an affair. Not the businessman who has his investments embezzled by a crooked colleague. Not the teenager who discovers that a night of romance has resulted in a surprise pregnancy. Not the pastor who feels his faith shaken by questions of suffering and fear. We’d be foolish to think we are invulnerable. But we’d be just as foolish to think that evil wins the day. The Bible vibrates with the steady drumbeat of faith: God recycles evil into righteousness. Perhaps you read this book in search of a quick fix for your challenges. “How to Overcome Obstacles in Five Easy Steps.” Sorry to disappoint.

I don’t have an easy solution or a magic wand. I have found something—Someone—far better. God himself. When God gets in the middle of life, evil becomes good. Haven’t we seen this discovery in the story of Joseph? Saddled with setbacks: family rejection, deportation, slavery, and imprisonment. Yet he emerged triumphant, a hero of his generation. Among his final recorded words are these comments to his brothers: “You meant evil against me; but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20 NKJV).

This is the repeated pattern in Scripture. Evil. God. Good. See the cross on the hill? Can you hear the soldiers pound the nails? Jesus’ enemies smirk. Satan’s demons lurk. All that is evil rubs its hands in glee. “This time,” Satan whispers. “This time I will win.” For a silent Saturday, it appeared he did. The final breath. The battered body. Mary wept. Blood seeped down the timber into the dirt. Followers lowered God’s Son as the sun set. Soldiers sealed the tomb, and night fell over the earth.

Yet what Satan intended as the ultimate evil, God used for the ultimate good. God rolled the rock away. Jesus walked out on Sunday morning, a smile on his face and a bounce to his step. And if you look closely, you see Satan scampering from the cemetery with his forked tail between his legs. “Will I ever win?” he grumbles. No. He won’t.

This devotion is too good not to share (especially during these days we are experiencing )!

"There is nothing more self- sabotaging and frustrating than being double-minded.

Now, in James 1, verse 3, James is suggesting that when we ask God for wisdom, we do so with confident and unwavering trust in Him. Still this can be applied to anything that we go to God for.

Because the truth is, you either trust in Him or you don’t.

Remember the ill woman who followed Jesus through the crowd (Mark 5:24)?

She reached out her hand thinking,

“If I could just touch his robe I will be healed.”

She didn’t say, I think I’ll be healed.

Or I hope I’ll be healed.

Or He’s healed all these other people but I don’t know if he’ll actually heal me.

She said, I will be healed.

And she did it; pressing in with full faith in the power of Christ.

Jesus says, “Your faith has healed you.” and she was instantly freed from her suffering.

He didn’t touch her. He didn’t say some eloquent prayer. (Not that I disregard any of these things).

But in this case, it was her unwavering faith and the 100% confidence of her recovery in the power of Christ that activated her healing.

Friend, faith is an activator.

However, fear is also an activator.

An opposing activator that wages war against our minds. There exists a spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7). But the spirit of fear and anxiety is opposite to the spirit of faith. The two cannot cohabitate the mind. One will, by nature, rule out the other.

So which are you going to activate today?

Let's commit to refusing to be double-minded.

We either trust God is at work in our life or we don’t.

Today when you give your worries over to God, you do not pick them back up. You don’t not worry about it any more. He has you.

You make up your mind about what you are going to believe. Keep in mind, faith is not the belief that things will work out the way that we want them to, but that God will keep us no matter how things turn out.

Action Plan:

Make a list of affirmations of what you will choose to believe today and hang it somewhere visible throughout your day.

Today's prayer: Lord help me to keep my thoughts fixed on you and to have unwavering faith for what you are doing in my life."

Let me just stop right here and say, God is good and He really does care!

I am personally so glad for and humbled by the promise: "[we have] a great High Priest who CAN be touched with the FEELINGS of our infirmities!" - Heb. 4:15

Compassion has been defined as, "YOUR pain in MY heart!" Think about that! What pain our Lord Jesus must have felt while here on the Earth as He ministered from place to place and people to people!

I'm studying Luke 7 today and I have seen Jesus touched with the miseries of a dying servant, a despairing widow, a doubtful prophet and a defiled sinner! Glory to God, He helped them all! What a compassionate Savior is my Lord!!!

What is the Bible for?

Let’s get honest about something. It’s easy to make Scripture say what we’d like it to say versus what it actually says. That’s why there are so many heated debates on social media that incorporate verses in a way that’s not always helpful to others or honoring to God.

So here’s the deal: Scripture is not for weaponizing or for winning arguments. It’s meant to encourage, correct, and transform us, and help us become more like God.

It’s critical that we use the Bible correctly. We’ve got to use verses in the right context. And we’ve got to make sure we’re using the truth of the Bible in a grace-filled way.

Don’t cherry-pick verses to craft an argument or bully someone else or justify your desires. In fact, taking verses out of context is one way we see Satan trying to tempt Jesus.

Before Jesus’ ministry gets started, we see Him fast for 40 days in the wilderness. During this time, Jesus was preparing internally before He ever taught others externally. He was filling up on Scripture and preparing for opposition through prayer.

After this 40-day period, Satan tempted Jesus three times. One time, he told Jesus to throw Himself off a cliff because the angels would save Him. He was actually quoting from Psalm 91. But Jesus said this in response:

Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’” Matthew 4:7 NLT

Taking Scripture out of context is a twisted tactic we shouldn’t repeat. So don’t use Scripture as a way to con others into getting what you want.

Wisdom about this comes with practice and with prayer, so don’t panic. Jesus could see through Satan because he knew Scripture and He knew His Father. So it takes patience. It takes time. But when you spend time consistently with God through reading His Word and talking with Him through prayer, the Holy Spirit will be faithful to help you know when something doesn’t honor God.

So remember—don’t use God’s Word as a weapon against others. But do use God’s Word as a way to wage war on our spiritual battles with our enemy. God will help you know the difference as you continually seek Him.

Pray: God, test my motives. Reveal anything in me that is not from You. Help me interpret Scripture in the right way with the right motives. Remove my agenda and replace it with more of You. Give me discernment to know what is from You and what is from the enemy. Help me use Scripture as a weapon against my spiritual enemy but not as a weapon on people. Thank You for the power of Your Word and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
