Our Story
Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is the oldest black church in Dalton, GA. It has been said that before the wooden structure was built, church services were held at the original site beginning in 1866 under a shelter of grape vines. The "Grape Arbor" years lasted until Bethel obtained lot #19 on Spring St. in 1868 for the (at that time) inflated sum of $50.00. From 1868 until the present day, Bethel has obtained additional land, undergone several renovations, welcomed and said goodbye to many beloved ministerial leaders, members and friends. We’ve survived lean years and prosperous ones, we’ve faced trials and tribulations, we have welcomed babies and said “see you on the other side” to our loved ones, but we have continued to open our Spring St. doors to the sin-sick and saintly, weary and robust, downhearted and exultant. We are a place where God dwells and we are committed to continuing to render service as God so directs.
