As part of the final sermon from our "Unfinished" worship series, Rev. Monica Frazier dives into what it means and looks like to live a life of service as a Christian. When each of us steps into this facet of our faith, more often than not we are folding into work that was set in motion long before we joined and exists outside of an individually-oriented desire to gather spiritual goodwill. We serve our neighbors, communities, and world to step into the collective, slow work that makes up God's justice.

We encourage you to reflect this week on what it means to you to step into service. Where are you already involved in serving your community, and where would you like to get more involved in the future? What are the things that keep you from folding in and joining this work in your day-to-day life?

This past Sunday, Northaven's Nick La Rocca and Larry McCain gave us a wonderful rendition of "Light of a Clear Blue Morning" to celebrate Dolly Parton's life as a faithful artist, activist, and unapologetic southerner. So many of us at Northaven have been deeply inspired by Dolly's life of service and artistry, and we honor her life and legacy by carrying on these traits in our own lives and, of course, keeping Dolly in our music rotation.

"Worship does not end with words of praise; it continues to live in lives poured out for the good of others."

We closed out our "Unfinished" worship series yesterday with Rev. Monica and Rev. Julie Harding speaking on what it means to "break every yoke," to serve each other and our neighbors, to live lives that are poured out for the good of others. While Northaven is a congregation already deeply seated at the intersection of faith and justice, we all can use the reminder that it isn't up to us to to break every yoke alone, but to break the yokes we can together as a united body of justice in partnership with our community.

When we are inundated with news of injustice every day, it can feel paralyzing to act. What makes you hesitate when it comes to getting involved in larger issues? Conversely, what causes and injustices are close to your heart and move you the most? Who around you is already fighting injustice, and how does God move you to get involved in that good fight?

Use this week to take stock of what yokes you're already actively working to break, and where you could take on more in your life. In a heavy world full of injustice, the evergreen good news is that each of us is not alone in this fight. There is much work to be done, and there are so many avenues of activism and service where you can put your grief to action.

As part of Northaven's continued partnership with ODIM, The Organization for the Development of the Indigenous Maya, several of our members had the opportunity this summer to visit Guatemala and assist in building a stove for a local community member in addition to enjoying time with local friends, art, food, traditions, and history!

ODIM is an organization whose goals center around enabling access to "primary healthcare and preventative health education" for local communities with "equality, honesty, and confidentiality that is focused on programs that promote development and empowerment of the communities of San Pablo and San Juan la Laguna." As always, Northaven is so grateful to grow our connections with, have new experiences in, learn more about, and spend time serving the San Pablo and San Juan la Laguna communities in Guatemala.

"If Care for us was an aspiration, I’d be up here trying to inspire you toward something that you don’t have yet. But if Care is a design, if we’re truly made for this, then the work isn’t inventing something new—the work is noticing what’s already true and choosing to live like we believe it."

In the third week of our "Unfinished" worship series, Rev. Monica and Rev. Mike House encouraged us to reflect on the Church as we reflect on our own bodies—when one part of the body aches in pain, the whole body suffers as a result. Congregations and communities, like bodies, must be attentive to all of their parts, and caring for one another as we do ourselves is an integral part of our human nature.

Every part of the body is essential to the whole, and every part of the body deserves attentive Care whether that means dropping off food with a recovering congregation member after their major surgery, leaving water bottles and supplies with our houseless neighbors during this heat wave, or sitting in silence with a friend who's grieving the loss of a family member when there's nothing left to say.

In a world where so many of us can barely manage to care for ourselves and our families day-to-day, how do you make time to take care of other people in your life? How do you extend your Care to your larger community, too?

"Connection at Northaven has never moved in just one direction. It moves inward, into the kinds of relationships that carry us through hard seasons. And it moves outward, toward the city and the neighbors we’re planted among. Both directions matter. You can’t have one without the other for very long."

This Sunday, Rev. Monica and Kati Wise from the CONNECT Team focused on how we Connect with one another and our community during yesterday's worship service. Each of us has areas of strength when it comes to maintaining the relationships in our lives, and some of us shine easily as attentive friends, family members, and coworkers.

As a congregation, Northaven loves putting effort toward making and maintaining community connectedness! We do so by regularly sharing meals, keeping up with each other's lives, and consistently showing up for people when it's needed most (regardless of whether that person has been attending Northaven for twenty years or two weeks).

Are there still areas of your life in which you struggle with disconnection? Maybe you have trouble talking to strangers you meet out in the world, or maybe you wish you knew your next door neighbors better.

What are some steps you can take this week to remedy this gap? Whether it's reaching out to the one coworker you don't know very well or introducing yourself to the folks on your street, we can always afford the time and care to Connect with others.

It's easy to forget that it is the quiet and unwavering consistency of our loving presence in the lives of those around us that acts as the most powerful invitation to God's table.
