Q: What has been the most rewarding thing for y'all about fostering?
A: To watch the children thrive, their personalities blossom, and them coming out of their shell when they finally start to feel comfortable and safe.

Q: What is the hardest thing about fostering?
A: The hardest thing has been the anxiety that comes along with the cases and making sure you are giving the kids everything they deserve. Constantly making sure you are enough for them.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a foster parent?
A: Love hard, give them your all, and also protect your heart. These kids deserve your whole heart and love. Don’t be afraid to ask for help throughout your journey too, and no question is a silly question.

Kinship care is always the first choice because it is proven that kids have better success rates when they are with people they know. Kinship care also allows foster parents to receive financial help, resources, community, and more so that they can care for the children. So often families walk this road alone. Our program is FREE in Beaumont and Longview to expecting dads and dads with children up to 17 years old. Learn how to be the best father you can be to give your child the support and love they need as they grow. This service is available for all kinds of fathers: biological, adoptive, foster, kinship, guardian, stepdad, and grandfather.

Right now, there are over 500 children over the age of 13 waiting for adoption. These are kids who, by no fault of their own, need a safe place to call home. The statistics are staggering for youth who age out of foster care, but loving families can make a difference.

Over the last several weeks, Buckner Family Hope Centers across Texas led community shoe drives, helping more than 6,800 children prepare for the new school year with backpacks, school supplies, new shoes and other back-to-school essentials. At our distributions, free services like haircuts, health checkups, and immunizations were also provided. These resources help ease the financial burden of back-to-school costs for families.

“Every student deserves to start the school year feeling confident and prepared,” said Monica Salinas, Senior Director of Buckner Family Hope Centers and Family Support Services. “As costs continue to rise, the gift of a backpack, clothes, or school supplies is a huge relief for families. Distributions like these help ensure they have the resources they need.”

Buckner Retirement Services was recently honored with two awards from LeadingAge Texas, recognizing both leadership and advocacy in aging services.

Doyle Antle, executive director of The Villas by Buckner, received the Award of Honor, which recognizes an individual who has provided outstanding leadership in shaping the future of aging services. At Buckner, he has helped shift from a traditional medical model to a hospitality-centered approach, elevating resident choice, wellness, independence and dignity.

BRS also received the Excellence in Advocacy Award for its legislative advocacy and educational work with lawmakers on issues affecting seniors and aging services. Andrea Sparks, director of government and strategic relations, emphasized the importance of engaging lawmakers, noting that Buckner teams joined others from across the state to highlight issues affecting seniors and aging services.

Because someone believed in Guillermina and Zeferino, they were able to dream and find hope.

It all started with a chance encounter when staff from Buckner México met Guillermina and Zeferino, the couple began building a family transformation plan and was able to dream a future for them and their family. Today the couple runs a local store in the heart of Mexico, selling snacks and groceries. The store allows the family to save money weekly while working close to home as they raise their two boys.

Because Buckner's approach to family strengthening is holistic, the plan for the Cruz Santos family not only involved financial planning and saving, but parenting classes as well as spiritual development. The couple is hopeful going forward for their family.
