The Simplicity of Christ: A Call to Purity in Faith
All Scriptures cited are from the New American Standard Bible (NASB).
The gospel of Jesus Christ is a message of repentance and forgiveness of sins, anchored in the name and atoning sacrifice of Christ. This was the foundation of the apostles' ministry as they carried the gospel to the world. Jesus Himself instructed that repentance and belief in the gospel should be followed by baptism in His name, as the means of receiving the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:44-49). Through this transformative act, believers are born into the family of God, with the promise of the resurrection and eternal life, as Paul writes in Romans 8:17 and 1 Corinthians 15:50-53.
Believers are further called to reign with Christ in His coming Kingdom on Earth (Revelation 1:6, 5:10). In the meantime, we are urged to grow in grace, develop Christ-like character, and love one another as Jesus loves us (2 Peter 3:18, John 13:34-35).
Following the Path of Christ
True Christians are recognized by their commitment to walk as Christ walked, in obedience to the will of God the Father (Matthew 10:24). Jesus declared, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter” (Matthew 7:21).
Christ’s example was one of perfect obedience and devotion to God’s laws. He emphasized that whoever does the will of the Father is part of His family (Matthew 12:50). Yet Paul, in his second letter to the Corinthians, expressed concern that the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ might be corrupted, just as Satan deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden (2 Corinthians 11:3).
The Craftiness of Satan
Satan’s tactics are characterized by cunning deception, designed to lead humanity away from the simplicity of Christ. Paul’s use of the word "simplicity" refers to a single-minded, sincere, and honest devotion to Christ. In contrast, Satan employs craftiness—distraction, deception, division, and destruction—to undermine faith by men who appear as lights but workers of Satan, 2 Co 11:13-14.
From the beginning, Satan has used these methods:
1. Distraction: Diverting Eve's focus from God’s truth.
2. Deception: Misrepresenting God’s Word to sow doubt.
3. Division: Encouraging separation from God through disobedience.
4. Destruction: Leading to spiritual and physical death.
In the Garden of Eden, Eve’s distraction and deception led to disobedience and, ultimately, the death penalty for humanity (Genesis 3:1-6,Rom 5:12, Hebrews 9:27-28).
A World Deceived
The consequences of Satan’s influence are evident throughout history. Before the flood, humanity turned away from God under Satan's sway. Even after the flood, the descendants of Noah were influenced to establish false systems of worship and idolatry, as seen in the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). This Babylonian system of rebellion against God persists today, as referenced in Revelation 17:5 and 18:4-5.
Christ Himself warned of a time when the world would mirror the days of Noah, filled with distractions and a disregard for God (Luke 17:24-30). Tragically, many Christian denominations have been ensnared by Satan’s deceptions, leading to divisions in the body of Christ. Despite the existence of over 45,000 denominations worldwide, Jesus established one Church with one gospel and one purpose.
Guarding Against Deception
Believers must remain vigilant, testing every spirit and ensuring their faith is rooted in the teachings of Christ (1 John 4:1). Paul’s words to Timothy emphasize the importance of Scripture for instruction, correction, and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16-17). At the time, "Scripture" referred to the Old Testament, underscoring its continued relevance.
Returning to the Simplicity of Christ
To avoid falling into deception, we must embrace the following steps:
1. Acknowledge the Problem: Recognize the divisions and false teachings in modern Christianity (John 17:11).
2. Assess the Truth: Compare teachings with Scripture (Romans 12:1-3).
3. Accept the Findings: Submit to God’s truth (1 John 4:1).
4. Adjust Your Life: Repent and align with God’s Word (John 14:6, Ephesians 4:1-6).
5. Act in Faith: Live out your faith in obedience to Christ (1 Peter 3:15).
As Paul exhorted the Corinthian Church, unity in the faith is essential: I exhort you, brethren...that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10).
Salvation is Personal
Ultimately, salvation is a personal responsibility. Each believer must test the spirits and ensure their faith is aligned with the teachings of Christ. As Revelation 18:4-5 reminds us, God calls His people to come out of Babylon and its deceptions, to live in purity and devotion to Him.
In conclusion, the simplicity of Christ calls us to reject Satan’s craftiness and embrace a life of genuine faith, rooted in the Word of God. May we be faithful in our walk, united in purpose, and steadfast in the truth of the gospel.
