As I was about to head off to my freshman year in college, my Granny Baldwin grabbed my face between her hands, looked me in the eyes and said, “John Dixon, don’t forget who you are.” Who we are is, in part, who they were. All the theys who helped form us. Parents, grandparents, friends … and for churches, all the saints. They handed us a history on which we could build our-story. They helped us understand what is important, and what is not. They helped us know, at our core, who we are. And, so, let’s talk this Sunday about what it is that makes us who we are … our core values. Those things that are non-negotiables, those hills we are willing to die on. Let’s talk about being lashed to our past.

Who you are is not who you will be. The question is, what will inform and form you as you become the not-yet-you? What parts of your past will you let go of and what parts of your past will you hold on to? There are things we keep around us that can actually keep us from becoming the person … or the church … God is calling us to be. This Sunday, come hang out with us as John chats about “UnCommon Past, UnCommon Future.”
