Joseph of Arimathea (and Nicodemus according to verse 39) hid their actions from the rest of the Pharisees as they cared for Jesus' body. This isn't surprising considering that Nicodemus met with Jesus at night in John 3. The end of John 19 says they spared no expense, to the point of giving up a newly made tomb in a garden near Golgatha. They wrapped him in linen, including about a hundred pounds of myrrh and aloes.
Then, they left him there. We learn in Matthew that the Pharisees go on the day after Preparation Day (Matt 27:62) or the Sabbath day. And yet they still went to the Roman officials and asked for them to seal the tomb.
Luke 23:55 tells us that the women who came with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and Nicodemus to see where they laid Jesus to rest. Mark 15:47 names these women as Mary the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene while John names Mary the mother of Jesus, her sister, Mary the wife of Clophas, and Mary Magdalene as having been present at the crucifixion... As well as the disciple whom Jesus loves, which most take as a reference to the Apostle John whose name is attached to this gospel.
Now, you would think that the disciples would be the ones following to see where he was buried, to stand with Jesus in his darkest hour, or to care for his body and its entombment. However, except for John, no Gospel places any of the 12 at Jesus' crucifixion.
Holy Saturday is normally a day of silence and sorrow, as we await Christ's rising from the dead on Easter Sunday. However, I want to challenge you to consider this as the day when the people no one knew about ended up coming in clutch for Jesus in his death. They cared for him. They served him at that time.
It is the same for us. Ministry doesn't just happen from the chancel every Sunday. No! Ministry happens when we open ourselves to another human being, seeing them as a fellow image bearer, and caring for them however they need. The bulk of this ministry will never find its way to the announcements or to recognition form the chancel. But, know that God sees your service, and God loves you so much.
