Then I thought, “To this I will appeal; the years of the right
hand of the Most High.” (Psalm 77:10 NIV)

This verse serves as a bridge from the lament in verse 9, taking the hymn in a completely new direction. “God’s right hand” implies the hand of God’s power, protection, preservation, deliverance, and defense. In the midst of the psalmist’s lament, God directs his attention away from himself to His right hand that will hold, shield, and protect him. For nine verses, the psalmist has been living like many Christians today—in subjectivity. Yet it is dangerous to build faith on feelings. How do you step out? With the objectivity of faith in a God who’s always there.

I have fought the good fight...
(2 Timothy 4:7)

Paul declares, “I have fought the good fight.” This is the grand fight of faith. When Paul summarizes his life as a Christian with the symbolic imagery of “the grand fight,” the underlying reference comes from an athlete competing in a wrestling match or simply an athletic contest. This fight involves a prodigious exertion of energy against a very powerful foe. Every competing athlete should desire to do his very best then so that, win or lose, there will be a deep satisfaction in his heart.

“. . . the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive,
because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him,
for He dwells with you and will be in you.” (John 14:17)

In the Gospels, Jesus is with the disciples. But today the presence of the Holy Spirit will be within you. If your life is full of evil, He will be with you to restore you. If your life is withered, He will be with you to straighten your life out. If you are in a storm, He will be with you to still the storm by telling the winds, “Peace, be still.” When your resources are inadequate, He will be with you to give you more than enough.

And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper,
that He may abide with you forever... (John 14:16)

The Holy Spirit is a personality, not an impersonal force. As such, He is the vehicle for the presence of both the Father and Son in our lives. As our personal Advocate, he is summoned to our side to plead, convince, and instruct. To the weak He is a comforter. Normally the word “comforter” carries with it the idea of passivity and weakness. This is a misnomer: the word actually carries the freight of strength. The Spirit comes to give us the strength to face insurmountable odds. Jesus said he would send another Comforter of the same kind as Himself.

(Mark 9:17)

There comes a time when you have to stop doing ministry in the same way. The programs that worked yesterday often are outdated today. And when those programs, ministries, and auxiliaries have outlived their usefulness, we should eulogize them and then deposit their remains deep in the ground. Today we have every conceivable mechanism to convey the message of the Lord Jesus Christ—e-mail, blogs, YouTube, Facebook, text messaging—you name it. You change strategies when you have to change. Be courageous enough to decisively and creatively change strategies when the present one stops working.

And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey;
the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”
(Genesis 22:5)

Like Abraham’s servants, sometimes you will be left behind with a mystery that you cannot explain. When this happens, you must follow God faithfully even though you may not understand the reason for doing so. Your greatest test will be to follow God faithfully, even when you can’t hear Him, feel Him, or even sense Him. Can you follow Him when you are disappointed in Him? Or will you stop serving God because of the gravity of your test?

There comes a time when you have to stop doing ministry in the same way. The programs that worked yesterday often are outdated today. And when those programs, ministries, and auxiliaries have outlived their usefulness, we should eulogize them and then deposit their remains deep in the ground.
