Call on the Name of the Lord

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”.

What does that mean? Do we just mutter the words and ‘POOF’ we are saved? Who can do it and be saved? Anyone and everyone? Can Satan and his demons call on the name of the Lord and be saved? Obviously not. There is more to calling on the name of the Lord than simply speaking words. Calling on the name of the Lord means:

*we acknowledge we are in deep trouble in our sins and we need Jesus to save us. (Matthew 1:21 says His very name means “save”).

*We are convicted and convinced in our hearts that Jesus paid for our sins on the cross and conquered the grave as He victoriously rose from the dead. He is the only one who can save us and we trust Him so much that we surrender and submit our lives to Him as the one and only Sovereign King.

*Then we devote our lives to live for Him and we are saved by His grace as we put our faith in Him. In Acts 2 there were 3,000 Jews who called on the name of the Lord in one day. They believed Jesus was THE Messiah, they repented of their sins, were baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of those sins, and they received the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. But it didn’t stop there. They topped it off by continuously devoting their very lives to live for Jesus with joy and praise to the Lord.

*To call on the name of the Lord is to worship the Lord everyday by becoming a living and holy sacrifice (Romans 12:1-2). You make your life about Him rather than yourself (Psalm 116:12-19).

Yes, to call on the name of the Lord is wayyyyy more than words – it is our life devoted to the Saving One.

*Read Acts 2:16-47 and listen to The Saving One by Starfield.

P.S. I hope everyone reading this devotional has called on the name of the Lord like the 3,000 Jews did on the day of Pentecost. If you have not and would like to study out what God’s word says I would be greatly honored to assist you. Have a great day close to Jesus, the Saving One.

My Will or God's Will?

The best decision we will ever make in our lives is to surrender our will to the will of God in Jesus Christ. We accept Jesus as our Savior AND Lord. By faith we are buried with Christ in baptism and receive the saving grace of God in the blood of the Lamb. Life is no longer about what we want – it’s about pleasing the Lord.

Paul writes, “…we have as our ambition…to be pleasing to Him” (II Corinthians 5:9). He also writes, “…walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects” (Colossians 1:10).

Isn’t it ironic that the most joy we experience is when, instead of living selfishly to please ourselves, we live selflessly to please the Lord Jesus Christ! It’s paradoxical. It’s also paradoxical that in order for us to win we have to surrender! Only God can come up with that kind of wisdom.

The opposite of selflessly surrendering our will to Jesus is to be self-willed. When we refuse to surrender to Jesus it’s because we want what we want when we want it. We don’t care what God’s will is – that would restrict us from getting our way. That kind of crazy thinking ignorantly believes that getting our way is the road that leads to happiness; however, it actually results in going over the emotional and spiritual cliff and crashing. Joy is a gift from the Holy Spirit as we surrender to Jesus as Lord (Galatians 5:22).

No one had more joy than Paul – especially in spite of his physical circumstances being horrific. Incredibly, Paul writes, “…we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death works in us, but life in you”. (II Corinthians 4:8-12).

Right after that he writes “…we have as our ambition…to be pleasing to Him” (II Corinthians 5:9).

Then he follows that with, “…but in everything commending ourselves as servants of God, in much endurance, in afflictions, in hardships, in distresses, in beatings, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in hunger, in purity, in knowledge, in patience, in kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in genuine love, in the word of truth, in the power of God; by the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and the left, by glory and dishonor, by evil report and good report; regarded as deceivers and yet true; as unknown yet well-known, as dying yet behold, we live; as punished yet not put to death, as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing yet possessing all things” (II Corinthians 6:4-10). Wow! Paul is submissive, surrendered, and selflessly living for Jesus; nevertheless, you would be hard-pressed to find anyone in history with as much joy as him!

Read Mark 14:32-36 and observe the submissiveness of Jesus to do the Father’s will. Then listen to My Will by D C Talk. Follow that with a submissive day living for Jesus as Lord and enjoy your joy in the Spirit.

I Stand Amazed

Have you ever been astounded? I mean, has anything ever been so spectacular that it left you speechless? How about amazed – ever been amazed? We’ve all seen athletes accomplish some astonishing feats and been awestruck. We’ve all heard musicians perform so stunningly that it put goosebumps on our arms and tears in our eyes.

What about Jesus? Are you impressed as you read (and see in your mind’s eye) the historical gospel accounts of Jesus performing miracles? Does the cross and resurrection of Jesus move you to the point of changing your life to live for Him?

Paul writes, “He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf. Therefore, from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come” (II Corinthians 5:15-17)?

I believe Jesus died and rose again and is alive forevermore. I have total faith that He is seated at the right hand of God. And, I still stand amazed at what God has done for me in Christ. I stand amazed!

One of my favorite Christian hymns is I Stand Amazed. Each stanza is amazing as it builds toward our home in heaven. The chorus is beautiful: How marvelous! How wonderful! And my song shall ever be. How marvelous! How wonderful! Is my Savior’s love for me!

Read Luke 24:13-35 and then listen to I Stand Amazed.

Overcomers

Words like loser, failure, defeated, and spiritual wimp do NOT describe us, right?!

We’re overcomers, triumphant victors who never give up, right?! We are winning every day.

Like Paul, when we get to the end of the road of life we will say, “…I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing” (II Timothy 4:6-8).

And, like Paul, we also believe, “If God is for us, who is against us”? (Roman 8:31).

Why in the world should we have a “give up” spirit? Why should we be shaking in our boots when James 2:19 says Satan and the demons are the ones who are shuddering?!

Let’s charge forward in this life with the confidence David had when he took on Goliath. We are sick and tired of Satan messing with our minds.

We need to apply Paul’s words to Timothy onto ourselves, “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline” (II Timothy 1:7). Full speed ahead with our (spiritual)guns a blazing. God is on our side, and more importantly, we are on God’s side; consequently, we will not fear or back down because the powerful name of Jesus and the Holy Spirit work in our lives.

Read I John 2:13-14; 4:4; 5:4-5; and listen to the song Overcomer by Mandisa. Then charge forward with a beautiful day close to Jesus.

City of God

In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) Jesus taught the disciples, “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:13-16).

The hard truth is we must do more to share Jesus with others. We are the kingdom of God. In Revelation 5:10 John writes, “…You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth”.

Included in our identity as the people of God is a responsibility to be focused and committed to share our faith to help others because we want everyone to be saved – just like Jesus does.

We don’t have to be perfect in our outreach because God will work with us as imperfect vessels. Like the apostle Paul wrote, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves” (II Corinthians 4:7). Many times God will work in spite of us – I know He does with me!

Read Matthew 9:35-38 and let the compassion Jesus has for the lost become your compassion. Then pray and ask the Lord to use you in His harvest.

Listen to City of God by Love & The Outcome.

Your Great Name

When you say the name of Jesus you have said a mouthful. Read this list slowly: Jesus is Immanuel (God with us), Christ, Lord, Master, Teacher, Son of God, God the Son, Son of Man, I AM, Savior, Redeemer, Word, Head of the Church, Lamb of God, Good Shepherd, Bread of Life, Light of the World, The Door to Eternal Life, The Resurrection and the Life, The Way, The Truth, The Life, The True Vine, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Judge, Mediator, Lion from the Tribe of Judah, Almighty One, Alpha and Omega, Chief Cornerstone, High Priest, and more. What’s even more astonishing is that Jesus is all of these things to each and every one of us if we are “in Christ”.

Jesus is the greatest name EVER. Jesus is also the greatest person who ever lived on God’s green earth in the history of the whole wide world. He is the eternal Son of God who left the glory of heaven and became a human to save us humans. He lowered Himself to be lifted up on a tortuous, humiliating cross. His love for you and me is beyond our ability to comprehend – it is that great.

Paul prays for us to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge (Ephesians 3:19). That’s a crazy way of saying Jesus loves us more than we can even imagine!

As exalted and as important as Jesus is, He is willing to bend His knee and bless the least among us. He blesses children, people with incurable diseases, alcoholics and drug addicts, the demon-possessed, the dying, liars, cheats, sexually immoral – ANYONE who will humble themselves before Jesus by turning their lives over to Him is welcome to Him – even stuffy religious people who have been trying to get to heaven on their own can come to Jesus for salvation by grace through faith.

If we call on His great name through faithful repentance and are born again Jesus saves us and the Father marks us as His children with the Holy Spirit. We need to walk through this day extra spiritually sensitive to who we are and to whom we belong. We have lots of issues but the main one has been taken care of by the one with the GREAT NAME.

Read Philippians 2:5-11. Then listen to Your Great Name by Natalie Grant.

This is a beautiful worshipsong, performed by Natalie Grant.Thanx for all your comments! :)

Drops in the Ocean

Thanks! I needed that bigtime! Needed what? I really needed to hear that God loves me and that He forgives me over and over day after day. I need that reassurance from God’s word. I need to read more bible passages that teach about God loving me so much that He forgives me of the stupid sins I commit. I need to read and be convinced and convicted by passages like John 3:1-21; Titus 2:11-3:8; Hebrews 4:14-16 and so many others.

I know that there are some people who call themselves Christians and abuse the grace of God as they live very sloppy spiritual lives. That’s not me. I am very aware and highly sensitive to the holiness and the justice of God. My problem is the scales tip very heavy with the holiness and justice of God and sometimes very light with the love and grace of God.

We must remember we live not by flawlessness – we live every day in faithfulness in the God who saves us. We must allow the grace of God move us and change into the likeness of His Son as we focus on His grace. We must NOT use grace as a license to sin BUT as spiritual gas in our tank to excel in living for Jesus as Savior and Lord (I Corinthians 15:9-10).

Just think: God washes away our sin – all of our sins – like windshield wipers wipe away the rain drops on our windshield as we drive down the road. Speaking of drops: wait until you hear the song today by Hawk Nelson entitled Drops in the Ocean. I heard it while driving in the rain today with my wipers on and it hit me between the eyes and also in the heart. It changed my day. I needed to hear its biblical message. You’ll love it too. “”.

Read Micah 7:18-19 and Ephesians 3:14-21. Then listen to Drops in the Ocean by Nelson Hawk.

C'mon, It's Time for

Ever felt so good about yourself that you just knew if you died you’d go straight to heaven? I didn’t think so. (If you did happen to have that hallucination please contact me for some spiritual rehab and we will work on step one as you come out of denial and admit your powerlessness over your sins and salvation, and that your life is unmanageable.)

What is amazing about God’s grace is that even though we are all sinners (Romans 3:23) who deserve the fires of hell, God’s love for us is so great that He sends us a personal invitation through Jesus. He invites us to come to His spiritual table and be forgiven, saved, and richly blessed as we dine with Him. If you are really spiritually sensitive today get a tissue as you read Luke 14:1-24 and watch the video as you listen to Come to the Table by Sidewalk Prophets.

Broken Hallelujah

HALLELUJAH means to praise God. Some people go through life and never know the blessing we experience when we praise God and say HALLELUJAH to the Lord. Then there are others who have a beautiful relationship with Jesus and they love to say HALLELUJAH for all His blessings.

When difficult times come it’s harder to say HALLELUJAH; however, our goal as we mature in our faith is to praise God and still be able to say HALLELUJAH in tough times. It’s one of the mountain peaks of spirituality that we hope to reach as we grow in our faith. People of faith like Paul, John, and others were still praising God in the midst of difficulties.

Our HALLELUJAH may not be perfect – it may be a BROKEN HALLELUJAH – but it still touches the heart of God when we let Him know we believe He is very meticulously, intimately, providentially, and even miraculously working in our lives between here and heaven – in good times and in bad.

Light Up the Sky

While out running early one morning I looked up and saw the clouds clear out and the sky open up. And there it was: the Big Dipper pointing at the North Star. It was a God moment to see His majesty appear as the clouds gave way to His marvelous stars.
What made it more amazing is that it happened at the same time I was listening to the song Light Up the Sky by The Afters. The lyrics ask for God to light up the sky so we can know He is with us. It made me realize that I don’t need God to light up the sky any more than He already has. He lights up the sky every day for me - and you.
People demand signs from God to know He actually exists, yet He confirms His existence every day through His creation. The world around us provides plenty of evidence. We see His power and majesty in the flowers, sun, moon, stars, birds, dogs, and maybe even cats 😊. The world around us speaks loudly of the glory of God.
Do you want God to light up the sky for you so you can know He exists and is with you? Look up! Look around! Jesus lights up the sky and the entire world every day for us to make a decision based on the evidence of the created world around us.
Read Psalm 19:1-6 and Romans 1:20 and know God is with you. Then listen to Light Up the Sky by The Afters.
