Metheg Rules

A Metheg (also Gaʿyā) is a small vertical line placed to the left of a vowel (often under a consonant) in Biblical Hebrew, acting as a secondary accent to indicate a slight pause, ensure proper vocalization, or separate syllables. It tells the reader to hold the syllable slightly longer, ensuring vowels are not reduced and distinguishing Kamatz (a) from Kamatz Chatuf (o).

Key Metheg Rules & Usage:

* Pretonic Full Vowels: A Metheg is placed on a long vowel (like Qamets or Tseri) in an open syllable before the main accented syllable (e.g., לָֽמָּה - lā-māh), indicating it should not be reduced to a Sheva.
* With Sheva Mobile: It is used to mark a Sheva (:) as a mobile Sheva (short vowel sound) rather than a resting Shva (silent).
* After Short Vowels (Ga'yā): It emphasizes short vowels (a or e) before a Shva or in open syllables, such as the Pathach in prefixes (e.g., הַֽמְסִלָּה - ham-sil-lāh).
* With Pronominal Suffixes: It appears in certain segolate nouns with suffixes to maintain the full vowel, distinguishing it from regular reduction patterns.
* Distinguishing Kamatz: It often helps identify a Kamatz (See Image) as a long 'a' sound, preventing it from being misread as a Kamatz Chatuf (short 'o').
* Avoidance Rules: It is typically not used directly before a Sheva that is under a letter with Dagesh Forte, or with the Vav conjunctive (except in specific poetic contexts like וַֽיְהִי).

Note: The Metheg is often confused with the Silluq, which looks identical but only appears on the very last word of a verse.

Hebrew, Aramaic, Lessons Of The Day

It is my prayer that you have been following the lessons daily.

Please feel free to save and print them as needed; to review them at your leisure.

I will also be sharing Hebrew Vocabulary List to aid you in learning the language.

We started off with transliteration and evolved to the Alef Bet. I will be giving you a Hebrew Transliteration Vocabulary List as well as a Vocabulary List of the Alef Bet.

In the Hebrew word of the day Part 2, we are still in Bereshiyth, Hebrew, Genesis, Chapter 1.

Once we finish Chapter 1, I will go back and give you an updated vocabulary list for Chapter 1; then we will cover verse by verse, reading the actual text in Hebrew. To practice reading Hebrew.

We will continue with the word of the day part 2 and give the vocabulary list at the end of each chapter, then go back verse by verse and read the actual text in Hebrew.

We will be doing this for the entire Old Testament.

When it is time to start on The New Testament, we will be learning Greek and Hebrew.

Habakkuk 2:2 & 3 KJV

2 And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

Have you been waiting for something to come to pass that you truly believe it was Elohim, Aramaic, (Hebrew), God, spoken/breathed? Does it seem like you have been waiting forever and now you doubt that the thing will come to pass?

Go back to Elohim, Aramaic, (Hebrew), God, and confirm that it was really him.

If he confirms in your ruach, Aramaic, (Hebrew), spirit, that it was him. Press on forward in emunah, Aramaic, (Hebrew), faith, until it manifest.

Have a wonderful day.

Love always,
Shalom, Aramaic, (Hebrew), peace,

Tehilliym, Psalm 1 KJV

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Sometimes God will allow you to go through things that you don't understand, while you are going through them. But everything that you go through is always for a purpose, a reason and a cause.

You may not see it at the time of your test and trials, but you will see it in the end.
