A Call to Commitment

The Lord will equip you with everything needed for carrying out His will.

Exodus 3:1-15

How do you respond when God calls you to do something that seems beyond your capabilities? Do you hesitate—or give Him reasons why He must have picked the wrong person? That’s exactly how Moses responded. But the exchange at the burning bush reveals two questions that can steady us when we feel overwhelmed by what God is asking.

Who is God? Presenting Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Ex. 3:6), the Lord called Himself by the name “I AM WHO I AM” (v. 14). The sovereign, self-existent, promise-keeping God wasn’t introducing Himself to a stranger but was reminding Moses whose voice he was hearing.

Who am I? When Moses questioned whether he was the right man for the job, God didn’t list Moses’ qualifications. He gave him something better: “I will be with you” (v. 12). Moses’ adequacy wasn’t the point—God’s presence was. And the same is true for us. Our sufficiency comes not from our own strength but from Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 3:5).

Has God given you a daunting task? He knows your limitations better than you do and has already accounted for them. So, instead of worrying whether you are enough, focus instead on the truth that He is.

Bringing Others to Jesus

When we answer the call to discipleship, we can’t help but share the good news with others.

John 1:35-42

When the disciple Andrew asked Jesus, “Rabbi ... where are You staying?” (John 1:38), he revealed he was hoping to spend time with the Messiah and learn from Him. That desire for sweet fellowship with the Lord wasn’t something Andrew kept to himself. His devotion to Christ naturally deepened his desire to share that joy with others—and he did so at every opportunity.

We find evidence of his mindset throughout the Gospels. Immediately after meeting Jesus, Andrew found his brother Simon and brought him to the Savior (John 1:41-42). Later, when a great multitude was hungry, he came across a boy who was willing to share his lunch. Andrew connected him with the Lord by means of the five loaves and two fish (John 6:8-9). And when some Greeks wanted to meet Christ, Andrew and Philip made the introductions (John 12:20-22). The disciple’s actions show he clearly saw the importance and the blessing of knowing the Messiah.

When Andrew answered the call to discipleship, Jesus said he would be catching men instead of fish (Matt. 4:18-19). As followers of Christ, we also have this same wondrous goal. Though our personalities, circles of influence, and opportunities to do so may vary, we’re each blessed with the chance to bring others to Jesus.

An Honest Expression of Faith

The Lord isn’t looking for perfect words—He simply wants your honest prayer.

Psalm 13:1-6

If you’ve ever brought a prayer to God and heard only silence in return, you’re in good company. The psalmists knew that experience well.

What’s remarkable about these songs to God is their honesty. David doesn’t tidy up his pain before bringing it to his heavenly Father. He cries out, complains, and even argues: “How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?” (Ps. 13:1). There’s no performance here, no careful phrasing. This is the honest cry of a man laying his anguish before the One he trusts with it. That trust is the thread that runs through the psalms, even the ones written in the darkest moments.

Lament in Scripture is never simply complaint—it’s complaint addressed to Someone. The grief is real, but so is the conviction that the One who hears is present and capable of acting. The psalmist doesn’t lose sight of who God is, even when he can’t see what the Lord is doing. This is the kind of prayer God invites. Not polished words but honest ones. Not certainty that everything will resolve the way we hope but, rather, faith that He is with us in the waiting—and that He is good. When we don’t know what to say, the Psalms give us words. And they remind us that crying out to God is itself an act of faith.
