Steak 'n Shake actually did what we keep asking fast food chains to do.
They switched the fries, tots, onion rings and chicken tenders to 100% beef tallow with no additives or preservatives, and went back to their supplier to get the vegetable oil out of the par-fry. Now those fries and tots are completely free of seed oils.
The burgers are pasture-raised, 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, with no antibiotics or hormones ever. It's a chainwide standard, not a limited test.
Buns are now officially seed-oil free and drenched in real Grade AA Wisconsin butter from a family farm, replacing the old buttery blend that had seed oil in it. They also brought back cane sugar Coke in glass bottles instead of high fructose corn syrup, and switched to A2 whole milk — 100% real milk from cows that produce only the A2 protein.
That's not a press release. That's an ingredient list I can actually read in the parking lot.
When their chief MAHA officer Michael Boes says real ingredients taste better than synthetic additives, customers are backing it up. This was their best sales year since 1992, and the tallow fries still start at $2.99, even though tallow costs about 30 percent more than vegetable oil.
Give credit where it's due. This is what real food in fast food looks like, and it proves a chain can make the switch.
