A NEW NAME, A GREATER PROMISE
Identity Transformed by Divine Blessing

Scripture:
"God appeared to Jacob again and blessed him, saying, 'Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel. I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase. Nations and kings will come from you, and the land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I now give to you.' Then God went up from him." — Genesis 35:9-13

Devotional Thought:
When God appears to Jacob as El Shaddai, He declares His sovereignty and invites Jacob into a new identity. From Jacob, the deceiver, to Israel, the one who prevails with God, this transformation showcases God's power to redefine, renew, and bless. The promise encompasses nations, kings, and legacy, rooted in God's faithfulness, not Jacob's worthiness. As Karl Barth notes, "Grace must find expression in life, otherwise it is not grace." Blessings require participation; to be fruitful means surrendering to God's vision. As William Lane Craig said, "Faith is not the absence of doubt; it is the means to overcome it." God's presence ensures His blessings impact the world. Dietrich Bonhoeffer observed, "Your life as a Christian should make nonbelievers question their disbelief in God."

Action Steps:
1️⃣ EMBRACE YOUR NEW NAME — Release past identities, embrace God's purpose.
2️⃣ WALK IN FAITH — Trust God's promises, even in adversity.
3️⃣ LIVE GENERATIONALLY — Your faith blesses future generations.

Lyrics for Contemplation:
"You're a good, good Father, it's who You are." — Chris Tomlin

Prayer:
God Almighty, thank You for transforming my identity with Your promises. Help me live in faith, trust Your purpose, and glorify You while blessing others. In Jesus' name, Amen.

THE LORD PROTECTS THE UNWARY
Resting in God’s Grace and Compassion

Scripture:
“The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. The Lord protects the unwary; when I was brought low, he saved me. Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.” — Psalm 116:5-7

Devotional Thought:
The definition of “unwary” sheds light on this passage:
1. “Lacking caution as a result of naïveté or inexperience.”
2. “Unprepared; not watchful.”
3. “Not alert to danger or deception.”
(Source: WordNet 3.1, Princeton University)

In essence, God shows grace and upright compassion to us when we land in trouble due to naïveté, unpreparedness, or inexperience. He doesn’t shame us for the pickles we find ourselves in—whether they result from honest mistakes or intentional choices. Instead, He fiercely protects us in our vulnerability and lovingly helps us grow.

This is why learning to walk by faith, not by sight is vital. Our emotions often deceive us, convincing us God is angry or ashamed of us when we stumble. But Scripture declares otherwise: God will never leave us nor forsake us. He doesn’t abandon us when we fall short. Instead, He is an ever-present help in times of need—fiercely guarding us when we’re exposed and patiently shaping us as we:
1️⃣ Spend time in His Word.
2️⃣ Yield to His Spirit.
3️⃣ Grow in wisdom and knowledge.
4️⃣ Put His ways into practice.

Henri Nouwen reminds us, “We are not what we do, we are not what others say, and we are not what we possess. We are the beloved of God.” Our identity as beloved children of God rests on His grace, not our behavior. This truth reshapes how we see ourselves and the world, freeing us to rest in His love even when we make mistakes.

Take a deep breath. Release it slowly. It’s going to be okay. The Lord protects the unwary, and His grace will carry you through.

Lyrics for Contemplation:
“You make my footsteps and my path secure
So walking on water is just the beginning.
Cause my faith to arise, stand at attention
For You are calling me to the greater things.”
— “Shepherd” by Amanda Cook

Prayer:
Abba Father, thank You for Your grace and compassion. Thank You for protecting me in my most vulnerable moments and never leaving me nor forsaking me. Teach me to trust You, rest in Your love, and grow in Your wisdom. Thank You for being my refuge and my strength. My soul returns to its rest because You are so, so good to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

WRESTLING WITH GOD
From Struggle to Surrender

SCRIPTURE
“Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day… And he said, 'Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.’” (Genesis 32:24, 28)

DEVO
Jacob's nighttime wrestling match was no random encounter. It was the culmination of years of conflict—deception, jealousy, and envy with Esau. Overwhelmed with fear before their reunion, he wasn't just wrestling with God but with himself and his identity.

Henri Nouwen observed, “The great struggle of the spiritual life is to let go of our fears and open ourselves to the love of God.” This encounter was God's invitation to transformation, not about defeating God but about surrendering to him.

Oral Roberts reminds us, “God doesn’t promise to deliver us from every storm, but he does promise to transform us through every storm.” (Expect a Miracle). Jacob’s limp became a reminder of his dependence on God—a visible sign that his strength came not from himself but from the One who wrestled with him.

Jack Hayford writes, “God never breaks a person to destroy them; he breaks them to remake them.” Through the struggle, Jacob gained a new name—Israel—and a limp, symbolizing his dependence on God.

The next day, expecting the worst, Jacob faced Esau. But something miraculous had happened: God had transformed Jacob's heart, preparing the way for reconciliation. Esau embraced him, not as an enemy but as a brother. Ruth Haley Barton reminds us, “God changes the world by first changing us.“

Jacob's limp wasn't a weakness; it was a sign of strength through surrender. Karl Barth captures this: “Grace is the power that transforms weakness into strength, failure into victory.” The suffering in the night prepared him for peace in the morning.

PRAXIS
1️⃣ Embrace the Struggle — Bring your fears to God in prayer. Wrestle with him honestly about life's hard things.
2️⃣ Allow God to Transform You — Trust that God uses struggle to reshape your character for his purposes.
3️⃣ Seek Reconciliation with Grace — Initiate healing in broken relationships. Let God prepare both hearts.

CONTEMPLATION
“Hold me, Jesus, ‘cause I’m shaking like a leaf. You have been my King of Glory, won’t you be my Prince of Peace?” — Rich Mullins

PRAYER
Lord, in life's struggles, teach me to cling to you. Transform my heart, shape my character, and prepare me for peace. Help me surrender to your plan. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

CHRISTOFORMITY: Becoming More Like Jesus

Shaped by the Spirit and the Word

Scripture:
"But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord." — 2 Corinthians 3:18

Devotional Thought:
Many will face astonishment on that Day when their eyes are fully opened before the Throne of God. To their eternal dismay, they will realize that the version of Jesus they followed at life's end was one molded to resemble themselves, not allowing the Spirit and the Word to shape them into the likeness of the Biblical Jesus Christ.

True Christoformity—becoming like Jesus—requires humility, surrender, and alignment with Scriptural truth. We cannot shape Jesus to fit our preferences or culture. Instead, we must let the Spirit and the Word refine us, challenging our biases and reshaping our hearts to reflect the Biblical Jesus.

As Dallas Willard said, "Spiritual transformation is not a matter of trying harder, but of training wisely." (Renovation of the Heart). Shaping ourselves into Christ's likeness is an active process of being molded by His Spirit and Word.

Action Steps to Avoid Shaping a False Jesus:

1. Immerse Yourself in the Word — Study the Gospels consistently. Get to know the true Jesus as revealed in Scripture, not as interpreted by personal or cultural preferences.

2. Invite the Holy Spirit’s Transformation — Pray daily, asking the Spirit to reveal areas needing reshaping to align with Christ’s character.

3. Resist the Temptation to Justify Sin — Confront sin honestly. Don’t manipulate Jesus into approving behaviors or attitudes Scripture calls you to surrender.

Lyrics to Meditate On:
"Change my heart, O God, make it ever true. Change my heart, O God, may I be like You." — Eddie Espinosa

Prayer:
Lord, I surrender my ideas of who You are to the truth of Your Word. Shape me by Your Spirit and transform me into the image of Jesus. Help me resist molding You into my image; let my heart and life be fully conformed to Yours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
